About Save The Bay

Founded by three courageous women in 1961, Save The Bay’s mission is to protect and restore San Francisco Bay for all people and wildlife, uniting the Bay Area to create a clean and healthy Bay. We lead initiatives to make our region sustainable for future generations, advocate for climate-resilient communities, battle pollution, restore wetlands and connect people of all ages to the shoreline through engagement and education. Learn more about our programs and achievements at www.saveSFbay.org.

Save The Bay strives to recruit and retain a diverse community of people with many skills and talents. We seek candidates whose experience and/or community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, respect, integrity, excellence, and professionalism. Save The Bay is an equal opportunity employer.

Position Description

Place yourself at the intersection of Save The Bay’s cutting-edge restoration, policy, and outreach campaigns with a position that interfaces with many different staff and subject areas within Save The Bay’s Development and Communications (DevComms) Team! Support our efforts to cultivate relationships with donors, corporate partners, and grassroots community groups. Help plan and publicize outreach and fundraising events, gain hands-on experience in professional networking and community partnership-building, and learn skills in fundraising, event planning, and online communications. The Fellow will work primarily remotely, with potential for some in-person collaboration with teammates in our downtown Oakland office and/or other venues (as public safety permits). Equipment such as a laptop will be provided.

The Development and Communications Fellow will:

  • Obtain a greater understanding about a career in development and communications with an environmental nonprofit, and concepts relevant to this field, by working with our team of talented professionals on various projects and tasks.
  • Participate in regular DevComms team meetings, and collaborate with diverse staff across our nine-person team, to learn about the team’s strategy, planning, activities, and implementation.
  • Attend regular Save The Bay all-staff meetings and learn about organization-wide programs and operations.
  • Provide support in the production and execution of Bay Day – our most significant community engagement event, which will take place during October (bayday.org).
  • Support our communications by writing social media posts using the organization’s voice, developing content for the Save The Bay blog, enhancing social media engagement, and amplifying our event reach by researching and posting calendar listings.
  • Support donor fundraising during our End of Year Giving Campaign; this is the most active time for donors to give. Tasks may include data entry, thanking donors, and assisting with cultivation tasks.
  • Conduct research on various types of donors and prospects (individuals, foundations, and corporations) and prepare summaries/reports to help the team synthesize the information and prioritize leads.
  • Conduct outreach to individual donors and cultivate meaningful relationships via handwritten letters, thank you cards, personal phone calls, and emails.
  • Gain valuable hands-on experience in professional writing, database/Customer Relationship Management (CRM) work, event planning, marketing, and digital communications.
  • Help expand our network of organizations/individuals related to fundraising and events by conducting research, forming relationships, and participating in outreach opportunities (potentially out in the community and/or at corporate sites).
  • Engage with our donor management and research tools (training provided), including Salesforce, individual wealth screening, and grant/foundation research platforms.
  • Assist with various support tasks, including database entry and maintenance, mailings, processing grant-related paperwork, and special projects.
  • Help us improve our training materials, documentation, and best practices for these tools.
