Position Summary


The Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) Communication Manager performs essential functions to support the GARE team with informing the public and members about the challenges and progress of achieving racial equity in the public sector. The Communication Manager is responsible for online publishing via the GARE Website, bi-monthly production of the GARE eNews, and coordinating GRE response to press inquiries.


The Communication Manager is highly organized, manages multiple projects and responds to changing objectives as the need arises. They possess exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.


Duties and Responsibilities


Works under the direction of the GARE Director (and in coordination with the with the GARE Deputy Director and GARE Network Director) to support member and public awareness of racial equity impact and results produced by the GARE Movement. This includes:


Publishing and editorial stance for GARE eNews


Moderation and publishing of member sharing via the GARE portal


Content development for the GARE website, including website publishing of Leaders in the Movement and the GARE Blog


Managing the development and publishing of GARE Working Group Issue Papers


Manage and publish a GARE racial equity toolkit case studies series to promote the use of this key intervention


Preparing GARE press releases and announcements


Coordinating with Race Forward Communications Division to respond to press inquiries about GARE members and approach



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


To perform successfully in this role, incumbent should possess skills identified below:


Write clear, concise communication for internal (GARE staff) and external (GARE member) audiences


Possess a willingness to be flexible working in an environment of shifting priorities


Be familiar using the MOCHA management tool as a mechanism for clarifying roles and accountabilities



The incumbent will be a proficient user of:


MailChimp for email communication with members, funders and the general public


MS Outlook for scheduling program activities and maintaining communication with staff


MS Office suite of tools (Word / Excel)


G Suite of tools (Google Forms, Sheets, Docs)



Experience using these platforms is a plus, but not required:


Higher Logic to assist with adding members, posting events and communicating with members on the GARE Membership Portal


Slack for internal communication with GARE Team members


SalesForce for client contact and cross-organization project management


Asana for internal project management



Qualifications and Experience


Experience with online publishing;


Bachelors degree or equivalent experience in related fields


Strong ability to work closely with others in a small organization with a team building culture;


Strong organizational skills;


Excellent communication skills, written and oral;


Collaborative, upbeat work style is highly desirable.



Additional Information


This position requires long periods of time at a desk on a computer up to 8 hours daily. This position will require quarterly travel up to three nights when safe to do so. Additional travel as necessary.
