Our Women’s Mental Health Shelter at the Park Avenue Armory is now seeking a Part Time Peer Advocate (8 hours/week) to join our terrific team. Our renovated Women’s Mental Health Shelter, located on the fourth floor of the historic Park Avenue Armory between 66th and 67th Streets, works with women ages 45 and over. The majority of our clients are between 45 and 60. We have a maximum daily capacity of 80 clients and assist over 200 women each year. Our clients, in addition to being homeless, have multiple physical and behavioral health challenges and, frequently, substance abuse issues.

Our experienced, multidisciplinary staff (social workers, nurses, case managers, housing specialists and more) provide an array of holistic services including health, psychiatric, social, recreational, fitness, counseling, legal and other supportive services that help homeless women leave our shelter, most generally for supportive housing.  We provide farm-to-table food every day for our clients which we prepare in-house.

Responsibilities: Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the Peer Advocate will be responsible for the following:

  • Escorting residents to housing placement interviews, housing visits, and other appointments;
  • Facilitating one-on-one and group Peer Support;
  • Linking residents to appropriate services and referrals;
  • Providing information to residents about health and wellness, wellness self-management, substance abuse and recovery, and smoking cessation;
  • Assisting clients with activities of daily living as needed;
  • Maintaining accurate and timely client and activity records; and
  • Working collaboratively with all Shelter team members to ensure quality service provision, appropriate client-centered care and the achievement of housing, recovery and stability related goals.

Qualifications: The successful applicant must possess excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, organizational and computer skills, and the ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of homelessness, mental health, substance abuse or residential support is preferred. Applicants must be able to serve as a role model of personal recovery and have direct, personal experience with overcoming the challenges of mental illness and a personal understanding of the homeless system. Preference may be given to applicants who are currently certified or eligible for certification as a New York State Peer Specialist.
