Lenox Hill Neighborhood House, widely recognized as one of New York’s premier human services providers, is a 125-year-old settlement house that provides an extensive array of effective and integrated services—social, educational, legal, health, housing, mental health, nutritional and fitness—which significantly improve the lives of 15,000 people in need each year, ages 3 to 103, on the East Side of Manhattan. Our Women’s Mental Health Shelter at the Park Avenue Armory is now seeking a Part Time Peer Advocate (8 hours/week) to join our terrific team. Our renovated Women’s Mental Health Shelter, located on the fourth floor of the historic Park Avenue Armory between 66th and 67th Streets, works with women ages 45 and over. The majority of our clients are between 45 and 60. We have a maximum daily capacity of 80 clients and assist over 200 women each year. Our clients, in addition to being homeless, have multiple physical and behavioral health challenges and, frequently, substance abuse issues.
Our experienced, multidisciplinary staff (social workers, nurses, case managers, housing specialists and more) provide an array of holistic services including health, psychiatric, social, recreational, fitness, counseling, legal and other supportive services that help homeless women leave our shelter, most generally for supportive housing. We provide farm-to-table food every day for our clients which we prepare in-house.
Responsibilities: Working as part of an interdisciplinary team, the Peer Advocate will be responsible for the following:
Qualifications: The successful applicant must possess excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, organizational and computer skills, and the ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally. High school diploma or GED required. A minimum of one year of relevant experience in the field of homelessness, mental health, substance abuse or residential support is preferred. Applicants must be able to serve as a role model of personal recovery and have direct, personal experience with overcoming the challenges of mental illness and a personal understanding of the homeless system. Preference may be given to applicants who are currently certified or eligible for certification as a New York State Peer Specialist.
