Communications Internship - Remote

LAC is looking for undergraduate and graduate students interested in supporting communications and advocacy efforts at the intersection of health equity, drug policy, and the criminal legal system.

Job Description and Duties

The Legal Action Center (LAC) uses legal and policy strategies to fight discrimination, build health equity, and restore opportunities for people with arrest and conviction records, substance use disorders, and HIV/AIDS. The Communications Intern will work directly with our Communications Manager, Vice President of External Affairs, and our legal and policy teams to further the work of LAC. This individual will primarily help develop, refine, and deliver messaging to multiple audiences that convey the importance of the issues we work on and how we work to achieve our mission.

Responsibilities may include:
  • Drafting and reviewing press releases, statements, op-eds, and other external-facing communications pieces in support of LAC’s initiatives and policy advocacy
  • Supporting LAC’s social media and e-communications efforts by drafting posts, newsletters, and infographics
  • Collaborating with LAC’s development team to enhance fundraising efforts
  • Designing and producing various publications such as reports, booklets, videos, and more
  • Outreach to media, various stakeholders, and partners to amplify LAC’s mission and elevate our strategic priorities
  • Conducting research on various topics as they intersect with LAC’s issue areas, in particular current events, to support programmatic goals

The Communications Intern will have the opportunity to participate in various meetings with various staff members, departments, and coalition partners. Likewise, they will attend conferences, public events, and training aligned with LAC’s mission.

Time Commitment

The Communications Intern will work from 10 to 20 hours per week for at least one semester (12 weeks), but preferably two whole semesters (24 weeks).

Compensation

LAC pays an hourly rate to interns if they do not receive external funding or course credit for the internship.

QUALIFICATIONS

• The internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students focused on communications, journalism, public policy, nonprofit management, or other related fields.

• The ideal candidate will have strong writing skills and a demonstrated interest in one or more of LAC’s work areas.
