Better Markets is a high-profile financial reform non-profit organization that seeks a Director of Derivatives Policy to lead our work regarding derivatives and commodities across the policymaking process, with a focus on the CFTC. That includes acting throughout the rulemaking process (which often includes Congress and litigation), performing research, formulating policy recommendations, authoring original materials, and engaging with regulators, policymakers, and industry on issues related to the derivatives market, derivatives regulation, and financial stability.

Given the importance of derivatives and commodities to the well-being of all Americans, this is an exciting opportunity to lead the fight for ensuring finance supports the real economy and jobs while promoting competition and fair dealing. Done right, this will help with capital formation and allocation as well as broader wealth creation and, ideally, reducing inequality and poverty. Our goal is nothing less than to make the American Dream available to everyone and ensure the economic and financial laws, rules and regulations work for Main Street American families, workers, investors, and consumers.

The ideal candidate will be a senior and highly motivated professional with significant experience in derivatives trading, analytics, and/or regulation. In-depth knowledge of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act and related rulemakings is highly desirable, along with a strong understanding of financial markets more generally.

Responsibilities:

  • Closely monitor activities at the CFTC, SEC, Treasury, and other agencies involved in derivatives regulation and rulemakings, as well as developments in the industry.
  • Perform detailed analyses related to the derivatives market, identify problems or potential problems, and develop policy and regulatory recommendations accordingly.
  • Conceptualize and author comment letters, issue briefs, reports, and other products for a range of audiences.
  • Participate in panels and other public discussions, as well as briefings with Congressional, regulatory, and Administration staff.
  • Engage with reporters and the media on areas of expertise as appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in finance, business administration, economics, or a related field. Advanced degree desirable.
  • At least three to five years of experience at the CFTC or analyzing policy issues and/or rulemakings relating to derivatives, preferably with 8 or more years of relevant experience overall.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Dodd-Frank Act.
  • Extremely strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proactive, self-directed work style.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong team ethic.
  • A good sense of humor!
