About Belly of the Beast

Belly of the Beast is a trailblazing, award-winning U.S.-based media outlet that tells Cuba’s untold stories through hard-hitting journalism and stunning cinematography. Since launching in early 2020, Belly of the Beast has become a go-to source for news, information and insight about Cuba and U.S.-Cuba relations for young people in the United States.

Belly of the Beast’s work has been featured in numerous outlets, including The New York Review of Books, ESPN, NPR, USA Today, The Hill, The Nation, Democracy Now! and the Miami New Times. Breaking with the practice of parachute journalism, Belly of the Beast is pioneering a new model of collaboration among Cuban and U.S. journalists and filmmakers. Belly of the Beast fills the void of in-depth and nuanced coverage of Cuba through people-centered stories and investigative journalism that expose the political and economic interests driving U.S. policy.

About the Position

Belly of the Beast is seeking a principled, fearless and experienced journalist to lead our coverage of U.S. policy toward Cuba. As our Senior Correspondent, you will be responsible for researching, writing, and reporting breaking news, feature stories, and in-depth investigative pieces that provide much-needed context to U.S.-Cuba relations. This role requires strong writing and editing skills, the ability to work under tight deadlines, and a commitment to producing factual, balanced and trenchant reporting. You will be a key member of a spirited team of creative, passionate and principled journalists and filmmakers striving to make a positive impact in U.S.-Cuba relations while forging a new model of cross-border journalistic collaboration.

  • Conduct thorough research and investigation.
  • Write clear, concise and compelling investigative articles, feature stories, blog-style newsletter pieces and social media posts.
  • Manage and edit our weekly newsletter “Cuba in Context.”
  • Edit the work of other journalists on the team as well as contributing journalists and writers.
  • Collaborate with our videographers, video editors, and other journalists to produce video reports and documentaries.
  • Report on camera and appear in interviews on other media outlets to talk about our work
  • Ensure all reporting is accurate, contextualized and adheres to ethical journalism standards.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines and managing time effectively.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Passionate drive to expose injustice and abuse of power.
  • A nose for a story and an eye for how to frame it in a way that challenges mainstream narratives.
  • Proven experience in investigative journalism and news reporting.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling abilities.
  • Rigorous editing and proofreading skills.
  • Strong research and analytical abilities.
  • Proficient in using digital tools and platforms for news gathering and distribution.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Critical perspective of corporate media and its role in reinforcing U.S. government policies and narratives

Preferred Candidates Will Possess:

  • Familiarity with Cuba and U.S.-Cuba relations or a genuine interest in the subject matter.
