Description

SDSN Association was set up in March 2014 as an independent 501 3 (c) organization to support the SDSN. The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) has been operating since 2012 under the auspices of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. The SDSN mobilizes research, academia, the private sector and civil society to promote the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implement the Paris Climate Agreement. The SDSN secretariat has offices in New York and Paris hosted by SDSN Association and SDSN Association Paris, respectively. SDSN Association also hosts the SDG Academy and other programs related to the SDGs.


SDSN Association is a relatively young and rapidly growing non-profit, with a reputation for excellence in the field of sustainable development. The Chief Financial Officer will be part of the leadership team of SDSN Association in New York to help it through an exciting growth phase, and help design and implement a sound institutional governance structure to enable it to continue its growth path. The Chief Financial Officer will also serve as Secretary to the Board of SDSN Association.


Responsibilities:


Leadership and Strategy:

  • Management and board reporting comprising of preparation and presentation of balance sheet and income statements as well as other financial reports as needed including detailed general ledger, accrual basis adjustments, revenue and expense analyses, and supporting schedules for balance sheet accounts
  • Support to senior leadership for developing long-term operational goals, budgets, forecasts and financial planning
  • Building and managing the finance and operations function at SDSN Association, including team recruitment and training
  • Working closely with the finance and operations team to review and refine financial policies, guidelines, processes, and practice to maximize efficiency and impact
  • Responsible for managing organizational and grant-specific audits


Financial and HR Management:

  • Overall responsibility for internal controls and financial procedures
  • Overall responsibility for overseeing the closure of books, preparation for quarterly and annual financial reports, month-end closing activities, including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts, bank reconciliations, and overhead allocations
  • Review and oversight of payroll allocations, benefits administration, oversight of processes for on-boarding and off-boarding of staff
  • Overall responsibility for smooth functioning of the Intacct financial system, including support to the finance and operations team on optimizing procedures within Intacct
  • Management of US bank accounts, including monitoring bank balances, managing bank wires, initiating wire transfers, and ensuring receipts and disbursements are managed and recorded according to agreed-upon protocols
  • Working closely with Paris-based staff to review Paris office procedures and financial operations, including Paris bank account operations


Grant Management:

  • Advice to senior management on overall funding projections and grants/gift management, particularly with reference to the needs of the organization
  • Advice to senior management on structuring and managing grants and gifts, including negotiating conditions to ensure compliance with state and federal laws
  • Working closely with finance and operations team to track spending, help ensure compliance with grant conditions as required, and review and approve financial reports for donors


Legal and Financial Compliance:

  • Responsibility for compliance with the laws of the State of New York, with U.S. Federal laws and international treaties as applicable, including Uniform Guidance, OFAC/SDN compliance etc.
  • Overall responsibility for filing of Federal, New York State and/or city tax returns and fulfilling any other reporting requirements
  • Responsibility for compliance with HR-related U.S. federal, state and city laws, as relevant
  • Responsibility for management of full suite of institutional insurance coverage for the NY entity, and close consultation with the Paris office for the French entity, as appropriate
  • Coordination with legal counsel as needed
  • Representation as the Data Protection Officer for the organization
  • Representation as the Chief Compliance Officer for the organization


Team Management:

  • Responsibility for building, supervising, mentoring and managing the finance and operations team
  • Responsibility for human resource planning for the finance and operations function at SDSN, including working closely with the team to identify new requirements, optimization of functions and procedures, and training and career development needs


Miscellaneous:

  • Other strategic and organizational requirements as needed by the Board and senior management of SDSN Association


Qualifications:

  • Masters in Accounting (or equivalent), CPA/CFA preferred
  • Strong accounting and financial management experience in the international or domestic non- profit sector required, preferably with a mid-sized non-profit with international operations
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of GAAP, Non-profit accounting, contribution/grant accounting and regulatory reporting (form 990).
  • Experience with managing complex donor relationships and requirements
  • Experience with HR management and compliance is preferred
  • Experience with the Intacct financial management system is preferred
  • Experience and/or knowledge of sustainable development themes preferred
  • Candidates should be self-motivated, entrepreneurial, and a strong team player
  • Please note that existing US work authorization is required for this position


Other details:

  • Annual, renewable thereafter based on mutual agreement
  • This position reports to the President, SDSN Association, and works closely with the Executive Director, SDSN and the Head of the New York office
