Role Summary

This is a new position, responsible for foundation, corporate and government grant research, writing, proposal development and planning to support Philadelphia Works’ innovative workforce development activities. The grant writer will also develop new internal reporting, information management and sharing processes. The position is a comprehensive planner who organizes, coordinates, and directs multiple planning activities across the organization and with nonprofit, business and government partners. The grant writer will receive support in developing grants from managers and executives across the organization. 

This position will be responsible for the following duties:

• Conducts research to identify potential funds for workforce development programs, projects and operations and identifies economic development, community and educational/training trends that may offer collaborative funding.

• Manages the development of proposals to federal, state, and local government sources, foundations, and corporations. Process can include drafting responses to Requests for Proposals or Letters of Inquiry, coordinating planning sessions with proposal team, securing necessary documentation and budget line items, writing, editing, packaging and submitting proposals. 

• Develops a work plan and timetable to facilitate planning and developing the grant application and reviewing and submitting grant documents.

• Regularly reports to the Executive Team on all grant writing/development activity.

• Develops and maintains an information grant tracking system, including what programs are available, where to apply for which programs and trends in federal, state, and private programs.

• Attends grant related meetings, cultivates rapport with funding sources, and explores opportunities to collaborate with other community agencies on developing grant applications.

• Works with Philadelphia Works’ staff to identify needs and service gaps that may be supported by new funding.


Education/Professional Experience

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a concentration in Community Development, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field and 3-5 years of experience writing/developing foundation and government grant proposals. A background in Human Services or Workforce Development is a plus.

Or, any combination of education and experience determined to be acceptable. 

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

• Demonstrated success in grant writing and proposal management for foundations and government awards.

• Proven research and funder cultivation at the local and national level.

• Very strong relationship building skills that engender trust.

• Thorough knowledge of planning and development principles and techniques, goals management and evaluation principles.

• Knowledge of the organization and function of governmental and other agencies active in planning and program implementation.

• Ability to work closely and effectively with management and the Executive Team.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of Philadelphia Work’s management, staff, governmental agencies, as well as external organizations.
