Position Summary:

At the highest level, the Marketing Engineer & Strategist’s purpose is to collaborate with our MarComms team to ship projects that attract, activate, and help more LEE members succeed. You’ll leverage your technical chops to accelerate the efforts, and increase the impact, of the MarComms team by removing technical barriers that would otherwise slow down the launch of marketing campaigns/programs.

The Marketing Engineer & Strategist’s responsibilities fall into four main categories:

  1. Executing marketing campaigns/programs that require technical skills
  2. Advising the rest of the MarComms team on how technology can be better leveraged to move the needle on MarComms’ goals
  3. Acting as the “bridge” between the MarComms and Technology departments; i.e., continually breaking down silos around how each team leverages data and manages LEE’s digital assets (website, CRM, email marketing automation platform, etc)
  4. Managing and coaching a small team of Marketing Ops individual contributors to goals, outcomes, and growth opportunities

You’re the right person for this role if you have technical skills, but you also think in terms of outcomes, not outputs. You measure success based on marketing goals (leads and conversions), not technical goals (story points or defect ratios).

Rather than serving as an order-taker who simply executes the MarComms team’s vision, you’re someone who’d prefer to have a seat at the table. When collaborating with your team on a marketing campaign, you’ll assess the technical scope of the project and provide strategic input on 1) technical limitations, 2) best practices, and 3) opportunities to streamline and/or increase the project’s impact.

Ideally, you’ve been in your career long enough that you’re a natural at quickly building trust, alignment, and influence cross-departmentally -- with special attention to the Technology team. However, you don’t need to be a senior engineer to be successful in this role: if you’ve switched career paths after several years in another field, and recently graduated from a coding bootcamp or similar program, we’d absolutely love for you to apply.

Tech strategy & training (30%)

  • Determine the technical scope of proposed MarComms projects, and provide strategic input on technical best practices that will ensure quickest completion.
  • Identify, recommend, and execute on opportunities to accelerate MarComms workflows/processes by making the best use of data and automations.
  • Document marketing workflows/processes and develop user manuals to prevent information silos
  • Streamline, ensure adherence to, and train team members on MarComms systems and workflows/processes (including team members within MarComms, and across the organization when appropriate).

Digital enablement of marketing strategy (30%)

  • Collaborate with the Strategy team to ensure ongoing functionality of proper tracking, so the team has visibility into key marketing-related data points
  • Build marketing assets that require technical skills (landing pages, email nurture sequences, microsites, etc)
  • Develop and ensure adherence to quality assurance procedures, especially in relation to any external-facing marketing assets

Cross-team partnerships (30%)

  • Build collaborative partnerships with other teams, with special attention to partnership with the Technology team.
  • Establish an ongoing feedback loop between Technology and MarComms to ensure each team’s priorities are as mutually supportive as possible.
  • Anticipate and flag collaboration opportunities (or risks of duplicate work/clashing priorities) between MarComms and Technology.

Direct report management (10%)

  • Lead the Marketing Ops team of 1-2 with an outcomes orientation
  • Manage and coach team members to goals, outcomes, and growth opportunities
  • Embed cross-departmental collaboration into the culture of the Marketing team with special attention to the Tech team
  • Continually strengthen the Marketing team’s internal processes for strategic planning, communication, implementation, and analysis
  • Manage the Marketing Ops portion of the Marketing budget with strong financial stewardship

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or commensurate years of work experience 
  • 7+ years of relevant professional work experience 
  • Experience leading or building web/digital projects
  • Strong, demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity & inclusion
  • High emotional intelligence, including superb interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time management skills.
  • Experience using one or more front end frameworks like Vue JS, React, Angular, etc.
  • Experience using one or more modern back end frameworks like Drupal, Laravel, Ruby on Rails, Django, etc.
  • Experience working with programming/scripting languages like HTML, PHP, SQL, Ruby, Python, GO, etc.
  • An extremely high bar for quality. You know how to figure out what excellence looks like, and chart a path for getting us there. You don’t tolerate sloppy deliverables or things slipping through the cracks.
  • Demonstrated experience building trust with leaders across other departments to launch cross-functional initiatives

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with the platforms in our current tech stack (these include Salesforce, Pardot, Google Analytics, Qualtrics, Google AdWords, and Tableau among others)
  • You’re comfortable learning new technologies
  • Flexibility on your technology choices
  • Previous experience working with a marketing team to ship, analyze and optimize growth projects 
  • Self-awareness to know when to ask for help, and aren’t afraid to do so.
  • Understanding of when to move fast, and when to tread carefully
  • Ability to effectively communicate and collaborate within a geographically dispersed team
  • Deep passion for educational equity and belief in LEE’s mission and theory of change
