SALARY RANGE: $80,000-$90,000 commensurate with experience, excellent benefits package


Newtown Public Schools is seeking an experienced professional to provide a clear vision for diversity and inclusion, and play a significant role in setting and executing the school district’s equity, inclusion and diversity goals.

Newtown Public Schools is undergoing a journey to create a community where all young people and adults experience belonging. The district is aware that equity and inclusion are prerequisites for belonging and are committed to addressing issues of bullying, racism, harassment, and systemic inequity. This is evident in the recent passing of the Board of Education’s Equity and Diversity Resolution and creation of the Parent Educator Advocacy Committee’s (PEAC) Diversity and Equity Subcommittee. Newtown believes that deep, trusting relationships between all members of the community are crucial to creating sustainable and systemic change. 


Position Overview:

The Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion will be a new member of the Newtown Public School community who will act as the liaison to students, parents, and staff to ensure their voices are reflected in the creation of equitable policies, procedures, and practices.

The Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion will be responsible for taking the Newtown Public School’s commitment to equity and inclusion to the next level and transforming the district to meet our community needs. This individual will act as a trusted advisor to district leadership on how to address the unique challenges faced by our diverse students, ensuring that we provide the best possible education for all who attend our schools. This is a new position for the Newtown Public Schools that will work directly with district leadership teams, the PEAC Diversity and Equity Subcommittee, and the Superintendent to further efforts to advance equity in the district. This role requires a thought leader who will collaborate with key stakeholders to execute identified goals and produce measurable results. This position will work to shift the culture of Newtown Public Schools to one that gives students--particularly students of color--equitable access to the resources they need to grow and thrive. The Coordinator of Equity and Inclusion is expected to travel among the schools within the district to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.


Responsibilities: 

Provide Strategic Leadership

·        Serve as a thought leader in the equity, inclusion and diversity discipline and cultural transformation. Build and maintain strong relationships with staff, students, and families.

·        Serve as the equity, inclusion and diversity information resource to district leaders and staff including matters related to policy.

·        Advise district leadership and staff on best practice to resolve issues related to bullying, racism, and harassment.

·        Create strategies to support students, caregivers and families, staff, and district leadership related to experiences of bullying, racism, harassment, and discrimination.

·        Develop relationships in the district and learn from families, staff, and students about their experiences in Newtown Public Schools.

·        Develop meaningful metrics, tools, and analytics that enable leadership to evaluate equity, inclusion and diversity performance and integration and effectiveness of the district’s equity, inclusion and diversity strategy.


Oversee Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Initiatives and Development


·        Lead the implementation of strategy, best practices, programs, initiatives, and training related to the district’s equity, inclusion and diversity goals. 

·        Design and implement approaches to collaborating with staff, students, and parents to advance the district’s diversity objectives.

·        Partner with school leaders to facilitate the collection and responses to students, families, and staff regarding internal and external complaints or allegations related to unlawful discrimination, harassment, bullying, and/or retaliation. 

·        Consult with students, families, staff, and district leadership as needed to offer guidance regarding effective resolution related to bullying, racism, and harassment.

·        Collaborate with the Superintendent's Office and Board of Education to compile qualitative and quantitative data regarding racism, discrimination, bullying, and harassment and their resolutions.

·        Work with the Superintendent’s Office and Human Resources to increase the pipeline of qualified staff from demographic backgrounds historically under-represented in academia and monitor trends in the recruiting and selection processes.

·        Partner with other departments within the district responsible for professional development to integrate equity, inclusion and diversity into training, mentoring, and professional development processes and procedures. 

·        Support the development of academic pathways, instructional activities, extracurricular opportunities, and field experiences that promote racial equity and social justice district-wide.

·        Facilitate the review, revision, and consistent implementation of procedures, protocols, and policies to ensure district-wide equity.


Represent the District in External Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Engagement

·        Serve as the district ambassador for equity, inclusion and diversity. 

·        Participate in panels, conferences, and other events, promote district image internally and externally. 

·        Participate in district committees to offer insights and resources relevant to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice.

·        Regularly consult and engage with external inclusion and diversity professionals to identify best practices and determine applicability to the district by attending seminars, conferences/events, and networking with relevant external professionals. 

·        Maintain and continue to develop expert knowledge of equity, inclusion and diversity by researching effective best practices, monitoring industry developments, evaluating emerging trends, and conducting benchmark comparisons.

·        Any other projects or assignments as requested and determined by district leadership. 


Preferred Qualifications: 

·        At least 5 years of prior experience in professional services, law, academia, nonprofit or other industry with at least 3 years of experience as an equity and inclusion professional. 

·        Bachelor’s degree required; additional advanced degree a plus. 

·        Excellent communication, interpersonal, presentation and organizational skills. 

·        Highly skilled project manager with expertise in creating and maintaining project plans, status reports, communication and change management plans. 

·        Ability to handle sensitive and confidential topics with a high degree of professionalism. 

·        Demonstrated leadership qualities, including excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills, strategic and innovative thinking, an ability to persuade and influence, and strong professional presence. 

·        Incorporates a trauma-informed approach to the work. 

·        Proven experience in developing and implementing equity, inclusion and diversity strategies and programs. 

·        Strong team building and organizational skills, including setting priorities, planning, structuring project deliverables, and problem solving.
