The Division of Diversity & Health Equity (DDHE) works to meet the professional needs of psychiatrists from minority and underrepresented groups and improve the quality of care for minority and underserved populations. Senior Program Manager of Diversity Initiatives represents the Division internally and externally, acts in concert with the Deputy Director to develop the strategic initiatives of the Division. Additionally, the role provides expert program development and management for the Division overall and works with all departments in APA on cross-functional activities. 


  • Manage APA Diversity initiatives/programming and oversees DDHE dashboard
  • Oversee programs related to mental health disparities based on geography, gender, sexual orientation, race/ethnicity, religion, and nationality. 
  • Manage existing national programs addressing workforce diversity in psychiatry and mental health disparities. This includes programs a part of the Workforce Inclusion Pipeline Program (WIPP) such as the LGBTQ Medical Student Program, Native American Early Pipeline Program, and Black Men in Psychiatry Early Pipeline Program for undergraduates. The employee will 1.) secure contact with undergraduate advisors nationwide to advertise program, 2.) serve as APA contact for the program 3) select mentors for students 4) assist Deputy Director in developing programming for students 4) connect students with APA educational resources, programs, and members who can help students learn and sponsor events about mental health disparities at their respective college or university.
  • Assist Deputy Director in developing educational materials/toolkits on mental health disparities for District Branches/State Associations
  • Develop agenda and related materials for DDHE programs
  • Complete post-meeting reporting and analysis of APA diversity related programming and products
  • Organize dashboard of APA diversity and health equity related products/events
  • Assist Deputy Director in managing mid- and end of year metrics of diversity-related programs
  • Assist in updating information for the APA Cultural Competency Webpage
  • Clerical work as assigned
  • Support the activities of the DDHE-liaised Councils, Caucuses, and Committees such as the Council on Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities, Council on Child and Adolescents and Their Families, and the Assembly Committee of Representatives of Minority/Underrepresented Groups
  • Plan and facilitate council meetings; develop agendas in collaboration with the chairpersons, create meeting dockets consisting reference material; take notes in the meetings; create meeting reports
  • Form and advise workgroups that work on Position Statements and resource documents; facilitate the activities of the workgroups
  • Draft talking points for APA/DDHE Leadership
  • Give presentations at council and caucus meetings annually, when needed
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred.
  • 3-5 years’ program management experience, preferably in an academic, membership, or association setting
  • Background in the subject of diversity, inclusion, and equity
  • Excellent cultural sensitivity
  • Well-developed meeting planning skills
  • Excellent writing, organization, and prioritization skills
  • Excellent proficiency with MS Office applications and The Internet
  • Travel, evening, and weekend work required
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet parallel deadlines
  • Certification in Project Management preferred
  • Experience with marketing and promoting events and services a plus
