About the Role

Youth Communication is seeking an experienced, enthusiastic fundraising professional to grow support for our story-based work to create safe, supportive, and inclusive schools and youth programs.

YC has a strong base of longstanding supporters, interest from new funders, and an emerging stream of earned income from professional services. YC’s leadership and board envision growth well beyond our current state. Leading that growth will take vision and drive, and a passion for championing youth voices. The ideal candidate will also have excellent fundraising, organizational, managerial, leadership, and communication skills to broaden and deepen support for YC’s work.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Senior Director of Development will help design and implement Youth Communication’s fundraising strategy, collaborate with external relations staff, build a sustainable philanthropy and business development team, and support the Board of Directors as fundraising partners.

About Youth Communication

Founded in 1980, Youth Communication (YC) mobilizes the power of youth voices to improve the lives of young people who are the furthest from opportunity, including youth of color, youth living in poverty, experiencing housing instability, and in the foster care and juvenile justice systems. Our writing program helps teen writers—and their peers who read their stories—imagine bigger and brighter futures and strengthen the social and emotional and literacy skills that will help them achieve those futures. The teens’ stories are the foundation of curricula and professional development that we create and sell to educators and youth workers.

One indication of the uniquely high quality of our work is that many alumni of our writing program go on to make significant contributions to American life, including authors Edwidge Danticat, Veronica Chambers, Jamal Greene, and Mohamad Bazzi, and social entrepreneurs and activists including Shawn Dove, Victoria Law, and JD LaRock. Another indication is that YC’s stories are widely reprinted in commercial curricula that are used in schools nationwide.

Youth Communication currently has a $2M+ operating budget, with 85% funded through philanthropic support and 15% through earned income from our professional development  services.

Responsibilities

Fundraising (85%)

  • Determine needs and recommend hiring of additional development staff, as needed
  • Build a revenue team over the next two years that supports the organization’s fund development and revenue generation strategy
  • Support the development of YC’s cultivation events
  • With the Executive Director, manage relations with several large national donors

Leadership and Strategic Support (15%)

  • Serve as a member of Youth Communication’s senior leadership team, charged with overseeing strategic planning and implementation, organizational operations, and financial oversight.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and peer department-heads to execute and evolve strategic goals to support YC’s NYC and national growth.
  • Collaborate with the Marketing Director and Director of Business Development to support YC’s overall revenue strategy and external relations efforts.
  • Support Executive Director in working with YC’s Board of Directors, including maintaining excellent relationships with board members, managing meeting and committee logistics, and recruiting and onboarding new members who can support revenue goals.

Qualifications

  • Passionate about YC’s mission to elevate youth voices to improve the lives of underserved youth in New York City and beyond. Able to communicate that passion to funders and potential supporters of YC.
  • Experience supporting the scale and growth of nonprofit organizations.
  • Eight to 10 years of nonprofit executive management, fundraising, and/or sales experience.
  • Demonstrated experience obtaining funding from individual and institutional donors.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, decision making, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Exceptional people, resource, and time management skills with ability to effectively manage up, down, and laterally.
  • Ability to persuade people and institutions to support Youth Communication’s mission, goals and ethos via presentations and public speaking.
  • Outstanding oral and strong written communication skills.
  • Highly organized with superb attention to detail and strong project management skills.
  • Comfortable with software systems for managing people, projects, and revenue-generation activities. (In addition to Microsoft and Google suites, Youth Communication’s core sales and development data and operations are based on Salesforce.)
  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent in education and experience; master’s degree preferred.
