Position Summary

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) seeks a part-time professional to support critical fundraising and communications projects during the Director of Development’s parental leave and then on a part-time basis going forward. This includes development research, individual donor cultivation, and communications management on our primary channels including social media, email newsletters, and our website. The Coordinator will be an integral member of BGI’s small team, with influence on individual giving strategy and significant room for growth in the future.

Job Description

The Development and Communications Coordinator reports to the Director of Development and Administration. They are responsible for two main areas of work:

 Development (60% of hours):

  • Conduct research and cultivate relationships with potential individual donors. Update and maintain knowledge base of potential, current, and past donors with relevant details like giving priorities and cultivation strategies.
  • Communicate with current and potential donors to keep them engaged, updated, and actively supporting BGI.
  • Create, distribute, and track fundraising deliverables like thank you & tax acknowledgement letters, invoices, grant paperwork, etc.
  • Coordinate logistics around virtual and in-person fundraising and public engagement events. Support strategy and execution of fundraising and marketing plans, vendor management, guest management, and in-person events.
  • Maintain a database of grant deliverables and deadlines, and support the creation of required reports and materials.

Communications (40% of hours)

  • Maintain active and high quality communication on all our channels. Write and create content for diverse audiences for delivery via various BGI-owned and external communications tools, including the BGI Website, eNewsletter, social media, press/publications, and other platforms. 
  • Create visual content, including photographic, video, and other media assets to effectively tell the story of BGI and the Greenway to our broad audience.
  • Garner earned media through written press releases, story pitches, and other materials.
  • Create communications and marketing plans to guide messaging and outreach opportunities for daily operations and for special events and programs.

Position Requirements

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in fundraising, communications, donor management, etc.
  • Excellent and careful communication and storytelling skills: ability to communicate effectively with donors, community members, partners, and other stakeholders
  • Excellent attention to detail and project management skills
  • Organized, punctual, resourceful, ability to work independently and collaborate easily with the team
  • Interest in and knowledge of bicycling / multi-modal transportation, urban planning, open spaces and parks, waterfront development, and government/politics on a local and regional level
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, MailChimp, WordPress, Microsoft Office, GSuite, Slack, Salesforce, Zoom. Preferred: Adobe Creative Suite and knowledge of HTML

Schedule and Salary Details: The Development and Communications Coordinator is a part-time, non-exempt (hourly), position.

Schedule: Up to 34 hours/week during Director of Development’s leave period (roughly the month of October 2021); approximately 21 hours/week after leave period. Hours are generally 9am - 5pm, with some scheduling flexibility.

Location: Hybrid remote and in-person; must be local to NYC.

Compensation: $36-40/hour, based on experience. Part-time holiday and PTO benefit.

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to develop, establish, and steward the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, a landscaped bicycle and pedestrian corridor contiguous with parks and open space, enabling access and connectivity to the waterfront as well as new mobility options for communities along the Brooklyn waterfront.
