Compost Operations Coordinator

The NYC Compost Project, created by the NYC Department of Sanitation (DSNY) in 1993, works to reduce waste in NYC and rebuild NYC’s soil by providing New Yorkers with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to produce and use compost locally. NYC Compost Project programs and staff are funded and managed through the DSNY Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability (BRS) in partnership with host institutions. 

The Compost Operations Coordinator is based at Queens Botanical Garden and reports to the Project Manager of the NYC Compost Project Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden. This position will support the Operations Coordinator and will share responsibilities for accepting and processing food scraps and other organic waste products. This includes staffing Food Scrap Drop Offs, making large quantities of compost with volunteers by hand and working in the field in all aspects of compost production. The position will be responsible for picking up and delivering material. The ideal candidate will enjoy physical labor; delight in working with people and sharing knowledge as well as working solo driving vehicles.

Responsibilities: 

  • Support with processing organic waste by making compost. This includes utilizing heavy equipment, preparing feedstock, maintaining and cleaning tools, and maintaining all aspects of the composting operation year round
  • Deliver compost and carbonaceous material for public events and support these events with technical assistance as needed
  • Staff and haul food scrap drop-off sites run by the NYCCP Hosted by QBG
  • Safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment, including skid steer loader, wheel loader, windrow turner, mechanized trommel screen, and large dump truck
  • Perform, document, and maintain a schedule of heavy equipment maintenance, such as oil and filter changes, greasing onsite, purchasing of required maintenance parts in anticipation of service intervals, replacing and improving composting technology as needed (timers, HDPE/PVC and tools)
  • Include seasonal QBG farm and horticulture waste as feedstock in composting operations as time and space allow
  • Ensure a clean and odor-free compost site, with a diligent eye on rodent prevention
  • Keep records of seasonal recipes, pile temperatures and moisture through composting cycle
  • Execute finished product compost testing in collaboration with Compost Project Manager
  • Maintain QBG’s public and staff Food Scrap Drop Offs
  • Develop feedstock sources as needed to operate the site at full capacity
  • Maintain data and add to tracking documents
  • Train other members of the team on equipment and site operations as needed
  • Support the NYCCP Hosted by Queens Botanical Garden team as needed and/or directed by the Project Manager or Director of Education.
  • Act as an overall ambassador of Queens Botanical Garden and the New York City Compost Project.

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of two years composting field experience, preferably with food waste
  • Basic mechanical competence to perform regular maintenance functions on heavy equipment, including oil/filter changes and greasing
  • Experience with diverse computer applications (Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Access, MS Outlook
  • Local and community oriented with excellent communication skills
  • Adaptable and flexible to dynamic conditions and work hours
  • A strong work ethic and passion for composting and compost science
  • Ability and willingness to perform physical outdoor jobs in all weather
  • Candidate must possess a valid NYC driver’s license and be willing to drive large vehicles (dumps truck, box truck) in NYC
