Up2Us Sports is a coalition of more than 1,390 nonprofit organizations that believe in the power of sports to fight childhood obesity, end academic failure, and reduce gang participation. Up2Us Sports’ flagship program is Up2Us Coach, a national coach/mentor program that places, trains, and supports coaches to provide meaningful experiences to youth in a variety of sports programs nationwide. More than 1,800 coaches have provided opportunities for more than 284,000 youth to be active, learn skills, and stay out of trouble through sports.

Position Overview

YES is seeking a full-time Adventure Programs Coordinator to join its growing adventure programs team. This position is responsible for a full range of activities related to program execution with a focus on direct service with youth ages 7-18. The Adventure Programs Coordinator will spend time in the field with groups mid-week and some weekends year-round. In the spring and fall the position will be responsible for co-facilitating climbing, kayaking, biking, and fishing outings with middle school groups during the day and after school. In winter the activities will shift to downhill skiing/snowboarding and cross-country skiing on week days and some weekends. In summer the position will be responsible for co-facilitating the YES summer camp sessions in the Berkshires and around Boston. This position reports to the Director of Programs and Operations and would be working 35 hours per week. Coaches would receive a living stipend is $15,105 for the year and the education award of $5,865. The stipend is paid out bi-weekly over the course of the year and the education award is paid all at the end once the coach has completed their hours. The education award and is only eligible for current/future schooling, or student loans. Service start date would commence Mid-August 2019 and service would end Mid- August 2020. Up2Us AmeriCorps Coaches must complete the following requirements to ensure successful completion of the AmeriCorps program:

 

 

·      Completion of the minimum required hours of service and training by last day of coach contract

  • Attendance at the Up2Us Coach orientation
  • Completion of twice monthly America Learns reflection logs at an 80% level or higher Completion of biweekly timesheets
  • Attendance at a day of service 

·      Attend/participate in Up2Us Sports trainings, meetings, and special initiatives

  • Attend Coach Training Institute (date to be announced by Program Manager)

 

Scope of Work & Responsibilities

·      Builds relationships with fellow YES staff, strategic partners, and expert partners to create a feedback friendly environment which seeks to strengthen programming and ensure safety.

·      Co-facilitates weekly outdoor activities (rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, skiing and snowboarding. 

·      Role models and instructs groups of 10-15 youth alongside expert partners and other YES staff

·      Assists in coordinating logistics for program promotion, recruitment of youth and chaperones, registrations, transportation, attendance tracking, and reporting of program outcomes

·      Demonstrates and practices group management including risk assessment, behavior management, and program goals.

 

Requirements & Competencies

·      Up2Us Coaches serving through AmeriCorps must complete their assigned term of service listed above not to exceed a 12-month period. During the term of service, the coach will serve in a direct service role. Additionally, the AmeriCorps Up2Us Coach will: 

-         Encourage participants to gain and develop life skills, knowledge, and techniques through sport, using lessons learned at Up2Us Sports’ best in class training events 

·      Perform data collection activities as directed by your Up2Us Sports Program Manager

·      Act as a role model, gaining the respect and trust of the community and youth served

·      College degree or equivalent experience.

·      2+ years of experience working in the youth development field

·      Desire to work outside and an interest in outdoor adventure

·      Ability to manage youth behaviors and mediate conflict

·      Understanding of risk management

·      Enthusiastic self-motivator able to problem solve creatively
