POSITION: Assistant Director, Digital Marketing and Design

The assistant director of digital marketing and design is the Council’s digital creative lead and plays a critical role in expanding the reach of the Council’s original content, including podcasts, video series, digital interactives, and publications, with the goal of engaging and educating the public on critical global affairs issues. S/he oversees the creation and execution of marketing campaigns using paid social media and digital display advertising, email marketing, and the Council’s website to expand the reach of the Council’s original content. S/he plays a hands-on design role and is responsible for the overall concept, creation, and deployment of creative content promotion projects ranging from digital interactives and landing pages to promotional videos and display ads. The assistant director of digital marketing and design reports to the director of digital strategy and works closely with the assistant director of digital content to ensure creative display and targeted delivery of original content to expand the Council’s reach and audience engagement.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategize, design, and create paid social media and digital display advertising campaigns to promote the Council’s original content, expand its reach, and increase audience engagement
  • Collaborate with assistant director of digital content to promote the Council’s original digital content using the Council’s owned media including email, digital interactives, and website; this includes curating the Council’s home page content and a weekly signature email newsletter
  • Manage the daily effective use of the social media and digital display ad budget, including understanding and tracking performance drivers and optimizing tactics and target audiences based on data, to result in the greatest benefit for the Council
  • Develop and maintain graphic templates that enhance the Council brand identity; review content and edit use of templates to ensure consistency throughout the organization; drive graphic update of Council’s website and other digital assets
  • Work with the director of digital strategy to support the ongoing assessment of the Council’s digital user experiences and user interface designs; assist in driving digital design modifications and/or website redesigns
  • Manage, motivate, and develop the digital creative officer; work with director of digital content to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget
  • Manage projects and work done by external vendors such as graphic designers, videographers, email marketing providers, etc.; request estimates and track project timelines and budgets
  • Identify and manage advertising sponsorship opportunities and liaise with non-digital (radio, print, OOH) advertising sales contacts to request proposals, secure and schedule placements, and deliver creative
  • Provide related communications support at Council events such as live streaming and/or live tweeting events
  • Perform other projects as assigned


  • Five to seven years of experience with digital content promotion and design including extensive experience with paid social media campaigns
  • Exceptional design portfolio that demonstrates creativity and effective content promotion required
  • Experience with Adobe Creative software and CMS platforms (preferably Drupal) a must and understanding of responsive web design and familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and video editing a plus; proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Google Analytics tracking and reporting processes as well as running Google Ad campaigns
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required; previous editing experience and knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, graphic design, journalism, public relations, or communications preferred
  • Strong interest in and understanding of international relations and global affairs
  • Must perform well under pressure and be able to complete multiple tasks concurrently under deadlines
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to work as part of a team with program officers, fellows, executive stakeholders, communications staff, graphic designers, and technical vendors
