CARA’s programs help transform the culture of schools and community-based organizations by training a wide range of youth and adults within those communities to support all of their students to and through college.  

About the College Inquiry program: CARA works with 20-25 schools and organizations each year to develop comprehensive, inquiry-driven college access programs. Working with teachers, counselors, and administrators, we use organizational structures strategically to embed post-secondary exploration throughout students’ middle and high school years. The College Inquiry Program works to:

  • Assess existing college access work and create goals and action plans
  • Facilitate the creation of college offices and develop the work of college counselors
  • Recommend lessons from CARA’s College Inquiry curriculum for each grade, developing thoughtful 6-12th or 9-12th grade scope and sequence plans
  • Plan and facilitate the ongoing work of college access teams and individual staff
  • Design and run professional development sessions on college access for staff

Job Description: CARA’s College Access School Coach will serve as a coach in a set of schools. They will support and advise staff through the development of a school-based College Inquiry team encouraging programmatic changes to support the facilitation of the curriculum and the implementation of school-wide events around college access. The coach will collaborate with the school staff in the development of the college office and school-wide systems to encourage more informed post-secondary matches and increase the rates of college enrollment and persistence among graduating seniors. 

Coaching

  • Working in 7-9 schools as a College Inquiry Coach
  • Assessing existing college access structures and supports
  • Creating and implementing action plans using CARA’s resources
  • Monitoring and fine-tuning both curriculum map and action plans
  • Managing communication with administrators and teams of teachers and counselors
  • Helping to plan and/or facilitate professional development for staff
  • Supporting college counselors on the implementation of counseling best practices 
  • Supporting college counselors on the efficient use of data management tools
  • Managing data and documentation for portfolio of sites
  • Collaborating with colleagues from other CARA programs to provide comprehensive support to schools across programs

Resource Development and Management

  • Creating and revising materials for the College Inquiry program’s suite of print and on-line resources: High School Curriculum, College Office Resources, and Resources for Leaders (professional development)
  • Developing agendas, session outlines, materials, and resources for professional development (audiences include counselors, teachers, administrators, CBO staff, and near-peer leaders)

Other

  • Managing invoicing and payment for curriculum and coaching work
  • Providing general office support, as needed

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess many, though perhaps not all, of the following characteristics and qualifications:

  • BA required, MA preferred 
  • Extensive familiarity with New York City high schools
  • Strong understanding of landscape of college application and financial aid processes for first-generation and low-income students
  • Experience as a college counselor and/or strong understanding of hallmarks of a well-functioning college office team
  • Experience managing relationships with multiple school administrators, school teams, or representatives of community-based organizations
  • Experience developing curriculum, professional development materials, and/or other learning experiences for students and adults 
  • Experience with staff development/coaching a plus
  • Demonstrated ability to pick up projects mid-stream, learn quickly, and rapidly take ownership 
  • Ability to work across multiple teams
  • A collaborative and engaging work style
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to efficiently manage a complex schedule
  • Comfort traveling throughout the five boroughs of New York City
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience and comfort using database systems 

Start Date: July 5th, 2021

Salary Range: $72-78,000
