Organization Overview

Founded in 2011 and based in Durham, North Carolina, Book Harvest (www.bookharvest.org) is a nonprofit organization that provides books to children and engages families and communities in promoting children’s literacy and a lifelong love of reading. Program Overview

In Book Harvest’s Book Babies program, trained literacy coaches meet quarterly with parents and children, either virtually or in the family’s home, to deliver books and a research-informed curriculum from birth to age 4; in the final year of the program, families receive support for a successful transition to school. The goal of this five-year collaboration with enrolled families is a trusted relationship with parents and strong language development and kindergarten readiness for children. External and internal research demonstrate the program's efficacy and impact.

Job Description

Book Harvest’s Book Babies Durham Manager oversees all aspects of program delivery in Durham, North Carolina during a time of Book Babies program expansion in Durham County. This full-time position includes direct supervision and training of the Book Babies Literacy Coaches, the Pre-K/K Transition Coach, and the Program Coordinator; management of quality program delivery and fidelity; data systems and program evaluation; core administrative processes; and the development and nurturing of community partnerships in support of the program’s growth and effectiveness. The Book Babies Durham Manager also has a caseload of Book Babies families with whom s/he/they partners to implement the Book Babies program.

The Book Babies Durham Manager will report to the Associate Director for Early Literacy.

The responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:

Supervision and Team Management (40%)

● Ensure Book Babies Literacy Coaches and Pre-K/K Transition Coach have information, tools, and training for optimal implementation of all aspects of the home visiting curriculum;

● Review and monitor Literacy Coach and Pre-K/K Transition Coach coaching schedules, child files, and data entries, ensuring fidelity to the program model and achievement of appropriate benchmarks for the program, caseload, and annual home visit goals;

● Attend at least two home visits (or viewing video of home visit) per year with each coach;

● Oversee and adhere to any protocols needed for external evaluations; train staff, participate and manage data collection for potential publication or analysis as needed;

● Manage and support the Book Babies Program Coordinator in his/her/their responsibilities;

● Review Book Babies staff performance annually, with additional quarterly and mid-year check-ins toward workplan and professional development goals;

● Hire, onboard, and train new Book Babies staff members.

Literacy Coaching Home Visits (35%)

● Develop and maintain partnerships in the community to grow the program and to streamline the referral process.

● Maintain a caseload of approximately 40 families and provide quarterly home visits to each, consistent with Book Babies curriculum. o Respond to referrals and conduct initial visits, subsequent home visits (virtual or in-person) and book deliveries. o Complete appropriate data entry and evaluation activities.

Organization Meetings (15%)

● Meet weekly with the Associate Director for Early Literacy;

● Conduct weekly reflective supervision with the Book Babies team in order to learn together, listen, observe, and provide feedback creating a safe place to process their experiences;

● Attend Book Harvest staff meetings as needed;

● Attend and facilitate family meetings and events as needed; Data and Program

Protocols/Evaluation/Expansion (10%)

● Regularly review, revise, and update the Book Babies curriculum and related protocols.

● Design, implement, and track evaluations of the program (i.e. Parent Surveys, Parent Focus Groups, etc.).

● Work with the Associate Director for Early Literacy to map out the long term goals and activities for Book Babies;

● Manage Book Babies data systems, with special attention paid to continuous improvement of data collection and integration;

● Prepare updates and briefings, and present findings on data and evaluation internally to a wide range of internal and external audiences.

Qualifications / Characteristics

Experience with home visiting and/or parent engagement and meticulous tracking of information via databases are essential requirements for the Book Babies Durham Manager. An abundance mindset and an unswerving commitment to parent and family leadership are core characteristics for this role. An innovative approach to challenges, a desire and the know-how for program growth, an enthusiasm for teamwork, patience, perseverance, and an attitude of gratitude, respect, and possibility are a must.

Characteristics of a strong candidate include:

● Background in education, psychology or social work preferred;

● Utter dependability, flexibility, and strong interpersonal skills;

● Cultural competence and the ability to work with diverse groups. Understanding of systemic racism and the challenges and strengths of Black, African-American, Latinx, immigrant, and refugee families that interact with these systems; Enthusiasm for teamwork and collaboration;

● Ability to handle confidential information;

● Ability to use personal experiences as a tool for helping others build success while also maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality;

● Ability to set up systems and handle data; familiarity with Pivot Tables and intermediate knowledge of Excel.

● Ability to provide own transportation and to work evenings and weekends as needed.
