Lead Organizer

Overview Voces Ciudadanas is a small and powerful grassroots organization that works to build the collective power of migrants and other marginalized groups by promoting community leadership, community organizing, educational programming and creating spaces for dialogue so that social justice becomes a reality for all. 

We are hiring a community organizer who has experience in grassroots organizing, base-building, member leadership pipelines and working with various constituencies while strengthening current projects. A deep commitment to social justice and experience working in immigrant and multilingual settings required. 

Voces Ciudadanas: Voces Ciudadanas is based in Sunset Park, Brooklyn and serves migrant communities of color. We build collective voice and leadership to make the change we want to see in our community. 

Current Projects at Voces Ciudadanas include: 

  • Voces Ciudadanas is launching a new campaign in the Fall 2021 to ensure immigrant parents have their voices heard in the District 15 school rezoning process. The campaign will use Participatory Action Research to engage as many parents in Sunset Park as possible; 
  • We have an ongoing campaign advocating for open access after school programs for all children in Sunset Park;
  • We lead the Parent Leadership Development Project, a project that aims to strengthen the leadership of parents within schools;
  • We run a community center that offers art programming for all families;
  • We bring art to public spaces to create a space for artistic expression and dialogue during Open Street hours;
  • Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we are providing foodboxes to over 125 families per week;
  • We are also supporting our members to  apply for the ERAP and Excluded Workers Fund and access Landlord - Tenant mediation 

We are creating a community where all residents are respected, engaged in creating the future they want to see, today. 

Position: 6 month part-time Lead Organizer to lead the Voces’s School Rezoning Campaign and the Parent Leadership Project , as well as support building community leadership through our other projects. This position could lead to a permanent position  based on availability of funding. 

Key Responsibilities 

Leadership development, Base-building & Organizing 

Lead the Voces Ciudadanas - CUNY - DOE District 15 School Rezoning Campaign through a Participatory Action Research (PAR) Process 

  • Communication in writing and in-person with CUNY & DOE 
  • Collaborate with Board Members on building PAR process
  • Create timelines, set goals, set schedules
  • Implement PAR process in collaboration with  outreach team, PAR community team and volunteers
  • Oversee training and research / outreach events
  • Coach outreach team, PAR community team and volunteers on public speaking 
  • Coordinate tabulation and creation of reports of data gathered through PAR processes

Coordinate Parent Leadership Development Project

  • In collaboration with outreach team, create a schedule for monthly workshops;
  • Collaborate with outreach team to develop content of each workshop;
  • Collaborate with outreach team to implement monthly workshops;
  • Create opportunities for outreach team and volunteers to develop leadership skills

Develop an internal base-building campaign 

  • Engage current members on existing campaigns/activities;
  • Create a plan for attracting more members 
  • Collaborate with Board and outreach team to establish weekly and monthly goals for base-building campaign 
  • Implement power building campaigns 

Desired Experience, Skills & Strengths : 

  • Experience (2+ years) in leading the process of base-building and membership growth. 
  • A minimum of two years of community organizing experience is required 
  • Proven track record of success with an organization that does community organizing and base-building. 
  • Ability to work in a busy environment while maintaining solid relationships with staff, board, and community. 
  • Considerable experience in public speaking / public relations. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent life experience and bilingual ability (Spanish / English or Mandarin / English). 

Values, Compensation & Location This independent contract position is based in Sunset Park Brooklyn and offers a family friendly workplace & flex time to accommodate non-traditional hours. This is a part-time (20 hours) position with flexibility, a supportive team & professional development opportunities. Compensation is $35 an hour.
