Intro/Program Description: Goddard Riverside Community Center is working in collaboration with the New York City Department of Youth and Community Development to alleviate and the effects of poverty and provide opportunities by operating a Beacon Community Center on the Upper Westside. Beacon Community Centers are located in public schools throughout New York City and serve youth from Kindergarten through age 21 and adults ages 22 and older, including seniors. Beacons operate year-round in non-school hours on weekdays, weekends and in the summer as a resource to the entire community by offering integrated programming tailored to local needs. Expanded Ed is partnering with the Beacon to provide pick up from school and afterschool services at the Beacon location to elementary school age children attending PS 84.


Purpose of Position: The GRCC Beacon Program is seeking a dynamic individual who will work with elementary school youth to provide pick up from school and after-school programming.


Schedule: 2:30pm to 5:30 pm (Flexible) Maximum 18 hrs. depending on how many days a week program is in operation


Provide Direct Service to Beacon Youth Members

  • Foster a positive learning environment through educational and recreational activities for elementary students during afternoon and evening program hours
  • Pick up participants from PS 84 and escort to Beacon program located in the Joann of Arc Complex
  • Supervise and tutor youth during homework help time
  • Supervise transition times to maintain order and safety
  • Encourage program participation and social skills development
  • Supervise youth to ensure emotional and physical safety
  • Enforce program rules and carry out corrective action when needed
  • Maintain attendance records for all facilitated activities
  • Participate in program planning and assessment
  • Follow established protocols for arrivals and dismissals
  • Support and contribute to activities, special events, community events, talent shows, and showcases


Member of Beacon program team


Attend staff meetings, case conferences, supervision meetings and training programs


Other tasks as required


Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Minimum of 1 years of experience working with a multi-cultural youth population required.
  • High School Diploma with at least 2 years of prior Group Leader experience required.
  • Must meet clearance requirements including Department of Education, Department of Health, SCR and SEL


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish preferred.
  • Strong youth development background preferred.
  • Demonstrated strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills


Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have/be:

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, specifically Word, Excel, Access and Outlook.


Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking –include participating in program activities with program participants


Work Environment

  • Indoor/Outdoor /Public school setting



Level of Language Proficiency

  • Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and Spanish preferred.
