The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, the region's largest grantmaker and permanent charitable endowment, is seeking a qualified candidate for the position of Program Officer. The Community Foundation’s mission is to inspire, support, inform, listen to and collaborate with the people and organizations in Greater New Haven to build an ever more connected, inclusive, equitable and philanthropic community.

In 2021, The Foundation launched Stepping Forward, a three-year supplemental funding commitment of $26 million to address the widespread immediate community needs caused by COVID-19 and to advance equity in Greater New Haven.

POSITION:

This is a junior level position that supports The Community Foundation’s grantmaking programs, including but not limited to evaluation, grant monitoring, grantmaking activities and grant analyses.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Be part of, and support the Grantmaking and Strategy team of professionals in the execution of department goals
  • Review & evaluate grantee reports and performance data
  • Compile various reports on grantee performance for staff and board
  • Review submitted grant proposals and provide written analyses for staff discussion and recommendation to the Board of The Community Foundation
  • Convene nonprofits and other community members on critical issues affecting Greater New Haven
  • Stay informed about and follow up as necessary on grant related issues
  • Provide service to multiple Community Foundation audiences and communicate through various methods, including phone, email, and written communications
  • Utilize The Community Foundation’s databases (Blackbaud Grantmaking and Raiser’s Edge, FIMS & www.giveGreater.org®) to analyze data and produce reports and manage grantmaking processes
  • Collaborate with all Community Foundation staff members
  • Participate in joint efforts and affinity groups of foundations and represent The Community Foundation professionally by responding to inquiries and attending meetings and conferences
  • Serve on cross-departmental teams
  • Work on special projects
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong and diverse experience in the nonprofit sector, a good understanding of how nonprofit organizations operate, and familiarity with community issues; experience in a nonprofit organization and/or as a grantseeker is preferred as is prior grantmaking experience
  • Strong analytical skills, critical thinking skills, ability to write clear, succinct, cohesive arguments under time pressure and make well-organized verbal presentations
  • Ability through analysis, questioning, informal research and site visits to understand the feasibility of submitted proposals
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically about the broad goals of The Community Foundation while remaining focused on the detail-oriented work and follow-through required by the position
  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced environment, with positive customer service expectations and with diverse populations and sense of community
  • Capability to be self-directed and a team player
  • Demonstrated ability to direct and participate in teams
  • Commitment to The Foundation’s mission and core values of integrity, diversity, vitality, collaboration, long-term vision, service, accountability and excellence
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Superior organizational skills and eagerness to multitask
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • College degree preferred; and a minimum of 2 years of related experience
  • Evaluation expertise and experience a plus
