Position Overview is expanding its reach, team, and programming. To support our growth, we are searching for several new roles that will work together to drive marketing efforts and support our mission. We’re searching for a highly motivated senior manager who is not afraid to bring fresh ideas to the table.

The role of Senior Community Manager will provide direct support to the Director of Social and Growth to strategize and execute creative, goal-oriented marketing programs to drive growth and engagement in our on-site community. This is a role that is deeply involved in shaping our platform’s editorial, programs, and marketing. This role’s primary function is to develop and grow Understood’s communities. This will contribute to the overarching community goal to profoundly impact the lives of the 1 in 5 children and adults nationwide who learn and think differently—by empowering parents, educators, individuals, and employers. Our team is dedicated to creating a society in which every individual possesses the academic, social, and emotional skills needed to thrive in school, at work, and in life.

You'll bring to Understood a wealth of community knowledge and a desire to tap opportunities that will deliver measurable results. You’ll work closely with editorial, marketing, product, and data science teams to understand our users and create programs that drive impact. You’ll be a key member of the team, tasked with redefining Understood’s approach to a user-focused community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define community value and approach by working closely with data science, product, social, and program teams, identifying core metrics and measuring impact
  • Grow visits and active members within Understood’s platform, groups, and forums YoY by collaborating with our product, social, and marketing teams to drive membership at all points of the member funnel
  • Leverage Understood teams and relationships with community leaders to cultivate understanding and adoption of Understood end-user tools and content
  • Partner with internal data science and social team to analyze program performance and provide strategic recommendations to engage, retain and help drive growth via impact-led community initiatives
  • Develop and execute cross-functional strategies to use community as a channel for growth within the Understood digital and social ecosystem
  • Update response protocols on an as-needed basis
  • Manage community management team
  • Moderate groups, articles, and blogs on platform
  • Contribute to constantly developing and sophisticating our approach to community
  • Conduct competitive research and compile industry information when appropriate and needed, all while maintaining data/reports for future use
  • Demonstrate a collaborative, hard-working, team spirit


  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 7+ years of experience in building and scaling a community or membership program

  • You are organized and have the ability set priorities and implement multiple projects with superior follow-through.
  • You have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • You have a proven ability to work cross-functionally and synthesize feedback from teams such as marketing, creative, product, etc.
  • You demonstrate strength in perception of the environment around you, striking a balance between efficiency, empathy, and leading change.
  • You have knowledge of or experience with programs such as Telligent and/or Salesforce.
