NEIWPCC is a regional commission that helps the states of the Northeast preserve and advance water quality. We engage and convene water quality professionals and other interested parties from New England and New York to collaborate on water, wastewater, and environmental science challenges across the regions, ecosystems, and areas of expertise.

The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve was established in 1982 when New York State and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration designated four Hudson River Reserve sites. The programs were undertaken to protect and improve the natural and human resources of the Hudson River Basin. Partners in the program include the NYSDEC Marine Resources, NOAA, NEIWPCC and other federal, state and local agencies.

The incumbent will promote informed coastal management and decision‑making by developing a successful Coastal Training Program, translating scientific information, building effective training partnerships, and fostering communication between scientific and coastal management communities; primarily on Hudson River habitats, and climate change effects on the habitats and on riverfront communities. This position is assigned to NYS DEC Region 3, Bureau of Marine Resources, Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve, Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, NY.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program management

Coordinate, organize and implement coastal training program workshops, forums and field activities to promote Hudson River habitats, sea-level rise, climate change vulnerability and adaptation and proactive shoreline management, and sustainable river communities and to build decision- maker process and technical skills.

Outreach

Communicate frequently on coastal and technical topics

Programmatic topics

Provide technical assistance to decision makers on priority issues.

Workgroups

Represent HRNERR on selected regional teams and workgroups.

Other duties as assigned.


RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A bachelor’s degree in life sciences, environmental science, or related field.
  • 3+ years of technical or professional work experience in the fields listed above or a related field.
  • Candidates who have taken a less traditional path may be considered if an aptitude for success and a strong willingness to learn is clearly apparent.
  • Ability to work in a broad collaborative style as an individual contributor and as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to express thoughts clearly.
  • Solid understanding of estuarine ecology and coastal issues.
  • Experience working with researchers and policy makers.
  • Desire to establish and maintain effective working relationships within diverse groups.
  • Education and outreach experience.
  • Proficient computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet and data analysis software, and geographic information systems.
  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to travel when travel restrictions lifted.
