    ABOUT HOT BREAD KITCHEN

    Hot Bread Kitchen’s mission is to create economic opportunity for women and gender-expansive people, immigrants, and people of color through culinary skills training, high-quality job placement, food entrepreneurship programs, and an ecosystem of support, utilizing New York City’s vibrant food industry as a catalyst for change.

    Since our founding, we have served 1,800+ members, placed 650+ members in high-quality jobs, and supported 550+ entrepreneurs to launch small food businesses.

    Hot Bread Kitchen offers small business development programs, culinary skills training, and job placement, bolstered by individualized wraparound supportive services. Our small business program, HBK Incubates, supports women entrepreneurs of color as they transform their food businesses into sustainable income sources. Culinary Fundamentals, our entry-level culinary training program, provides access to high-quality jobs for those starting their careers in the food industry, while our Upskilling and Job Quality Initiatives program enables incumbent workers to gain further skills leading to higher wages and career advancement. We use an ecosystem approach to support our members by working alongside our network of 200+ food employer partners for job placement, and 250+ nonprofit and government partners for member referrals and community engagement.

    THE OPPORTUNITY

    The Vice President of Development will lead Hot Bread Kitchen’s 8-person, high-performing development team, raising $10 million+ in private and public revenue.

    The VP will have an integral role at a critical time in the organization’s growth. Hot Bread Kitchen will commence our 2025 - 2027 Strategic Plan, projecting to grow revenue by 40% over the next 3 years. Reporting to the Chief Strategy & Advancement Officer (CSAO), this new role will be responsible for leading day-to-day management of the team, and will oversee a team of 3 Directors: Director of Institutional Giving, Director of Individual Giving, and Director of Events. The organization is currently undergoing a feasibility study towards a multi-year capital campaign, and will require an experienced and visionary leader to execute the campaign in partnership with the Executive Team.

    The successful candidate will have a history of successfully securing principal and major gifts, and leading fundraising events and campaigns. They will have experience developing comprehensive Development and storytelling strategies, a passion for managing teams, and a commitment to systematizing and leveraging data to support fundraising strategy. We are looking for a flexible, emotionally intelligent leader with direct experience in growing teams, and securing transformational revenue.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    Team Leadership

    • Works in partnership with the CSAO and development team to set annual goals across revenue sources.
    • Effectively leads and organizes the development team’s day-to-day operations, budgets, streamlines process and procedures, and establishes team goals and KPIs.
    • Leads and mentors a skilled staff, preparing them to perform at high levels to meet the challenges of an ambitious revenue plan.
    • Supports a culture of data - overseeing processes for data gathering, reporting and analytics.
    • Commits to and actively supports a culture of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Allyship in all aspects of their work and across the organization.

    Development and Revenue Growth

    • Responsible for strategy development, implementation and measuring success of the annual revenue growth and diversification of our philanthropic income (currently: 60% corporate philanthropy and foundations, 20% government and 20% individual giving).
    • Provides leadership and drives significant growth to the major gifts program, which includes board giving.
    • Directly manages a portfolio of top donors with the goal of building multi-year, comprehensive partnerships that include financial, programmatic and technical support.
    • Supports the Development Team in managing their portfolios, prospect identification, and securing new funders.
    • Reviews grant proposals and budgets for the Institutional Team, and supports ideation of new restricted funding opportunities.
    • Provides strategic leadership to all events and campaigns, with specific attention to Hot Bread Kitchen’s premier fundraising and engagement event, the Annual Breadwinners Benefit, managed by the Director of Events. The VP will oversee the planning, budgeting and execution of the event, ensuring maximized revenue growth and an entry point for new supporters to the organization each year. The Annual Breadwinners Benefit, held each spring, raised $1 million in 2024.
    • Collaborates cross functionally with the Program and Executive Teams to support the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of key funders.
    • Provides support to the CSAO and Executive Team to support all board relations, governance and quarterly meetings.

    Capital Campaign

    • Manage an upcoming capital campaign in partnership with the CSAO and consultant group. Responsibilities will include:
      • Oversight of campaign reporting, communications, and the execution of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
      • Develop ongoing relationships with key prospects, donors and other stakeholders with the goal of long-term mission engagement.
      • Strategize and implement donor recognition opportunities.
      • Work in partnership with the Executive Team to manage the campaign budget.
      • Collaborate with the Brand Team to manage all media and other communications needs, including the development of promotional materials.
      • Provide on-site leadership for all staff in the education of the capital campaign and its importance to the growth of the organization.
      • Manage and develop solutions for needs and challenges that arise during a multi-year campaign.

    DESIRED ATTRIBUTES:

    • 10-15 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising.
    • Direct experience in successfully managing a portfolio of principal and major gift donors, institutional donors, and managing benefit events. Experience leading a capital campaign is a plus.
    • Must have a strong understanding of the components of a successful grant proposal and budget development for foundations, corporate philanthropy and government grants.
    • Successful history of designing progressive fundraising strategic plans.
    • Strong people management skills with proven ability to both lead and inspire teams to meet ambitious goals.
    • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, ability to confidently pitch and present to senior level corporate and foundation staff.
    • Experience working closely with a Board of Directors and ExecutiveTeam.
    • Ability to successfully set priorities, have keen analytical, organizational and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
    • Energetic and self-directed, with effective time management, organizational skills and ability to simultaneously manage several priorities and team members.
    • Must be technology proficient and have comfort learning new applications such as Salesforce, Asana, and Slack, among others, to facilitate our daily work.

    Location

    This is a hybrid position, with flexibility to work remotely. Regular in-person attendance is required each week for departmental needs and events. Our facility, located in Manhattan (Chelsea A/C/E/L), is open in line with city, state, and organizational guidelines.

    Compensation

    This is a full-time position with a salary range between $140,000 - $150,000.
