This full time position will work as a Re-entry and community liaison for The Hort’s nine horticultural therapy and vocational programs on Rikers Island. The GreenHouse program serves women and men who are detained and sentenced ranging in age from 16- 60+ years, with several of the groups focusing on individuals who have been diagnosed with mental illness. GreenHouse provides programming on Rikers Island on seven days per week, and this position may include occasional weekend work. The GreenHouse curriculum combines horticultural therapy, classroom instruction in botany, horticulture and landscape design, and year round hands-on vocational training. The Re-entry Coordinator/Community Liaison will work closely with the program director, program managers, horticultural therapists, partnering community based re-entry organizations and correctional staff, and the position includes:

·        Creating and maintaining beneficial relationships with GreenHouse participants while on Rikers Island by regularly visiting with all groups during their program times and with GreenHouse graduates after release

·        Assisting participants in development of personal transition plan while incarcerated

·        Maintaining contact and tracking GreenHouse graduates for 18 months in educational attainment, employment, substance use programs, recidivism

·        Maintaining contact with GreenHouse graduates when transferred upstate if desired by individual

·        Identifying, creating and maintaining beneficial relationships with relevant reentry service providers to expand the The Hort’s social service network in the areas of :

o  Employment/internships

o  Education

o  Housing and emergency shelters

o  Mental and behavioral health

o  Substance use services

o  Parenting/Family courts

o  Immigration

o  Food resources

·        In collaboration with The Hort’s GreenTeam staff, locating horticulture and landscaping companies to hire formerly incarcerated individuals

·        Planning quarterly gatherings for GreenHouse graduates and their families

·        Developing and implementing incentives for GreenHouse graduates to maintain contact

·        In collaboration with The Hort’s GreenHouse and GreenTeam staff, create relationships with community gardens in neighborhoods with high incarceration rates for graduates to work/be in

·        Providing trainings and update GreenHouse staff on topics of reentry services

·        Actively participating in monthly New York Reentry Education Network (NYREN) meetings

Qualifications: MSW preferred; Spanish speaker strongly encouraged; Must be familiar with the carceral system and reentry services; Must have ability to clearly understand the program goals and objectives of a horticultural therapy program in a correctional setting; Must have experience working with youth at-risk, people with mental illness, people with a history of substance use and/or individuals who are incarcerated. In addition to having an open mind and a non-judgmental attitude towards people from all routes of life, the applicant needs to be courteous, well organized, tenacious and patient. The applicant must have demonstrated experience with administrative tasks, data entry and evaluation, and be able to work independently with the highest level of professionalism. Applicant needs to be flexible and willing to include weekend worktime. Experience with working in a city agency, in a correctional setting or an enclosed facility are a plus.
