    Position Overview

    Part-time: (20 hours/week)

    Preferred Geography: Northern Shenandoah Valley or West Virginia Panhandle

    The Stewardship and Transaction Manager role will be vital in ensuring lasting conservation progress in the Potomac River watershed by assisting with both easement stewardship and new easement acquisition. The role will report to the Sr. Director of Land Conservation and working closely with the Director of Land Management and Stewardship, The Stewardship and Transaction Manager will complete 20-30 annual monitoring visits, build relationships with private landowners, and provide support to new conservation projects, including coordinating title work, surveys, and mapping. The role will include a balance of field work and remote office work. This is a permanent 20 hour/week position.

    Specific Duties:

    Easement Stewardship (40%)

    • Conduct easement monitoring visits, including coordinating visits with landowners, reviewing easements, and doing site visits
      • Monitoring may be conducted by vehicle, on foot in rough terrain, by sight and GPS from small aircraft, and by review of aerial or satellite images.
    • Maintain organized records of stewardship visits and landowner communications, in compliance with Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices.
    • Ensure conservation easement stewardship database (Landscape) is kept up to date
    • Potential to assist with Best Management Practice planning on conservation easements.

    Easement Transaction Assistance (40%)

    • Draft Baseline Documentation Reports and Current Conditions Reports
    • Coordinate due diligence for potential easements, including ordering title work and surveys
    • Contribute to grant proposals for land protection projects
    • Compile easement information for board and committee meetings

    GIS (10%)

    • Prepare GIS maps of current and prospective easements
    • Assist with prioritization models for target conservation geographies

    Other (10%)

    • Participate in occasional Conservancy outreach events relevant to the Lands program.
    • Contribute to program and organization-wide planning, as needed.
    • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and activities.
    • Participate in professional development activities related to responsibilities of the position.

    Qualifications

    • 2-5 years of relevant experience working in conservation, land management, stewardship, or another relevant field. A relevant bachelor’s degree may be substituted for some professional experience
    • Experience creating maps in ArcPro GIS
    • Demonstrated expertise in MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
    • Proven organizational skills and strong attention to and interest in detail. Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple and diverse tasks
    • Ability to navigate in rural areas (even off road or off trail) without cellular reception using GPS, maps, & compass
    • Clear and efficient communication and writing
    • Access to a vehicle for travel in the region with mileage reimbursement
    • Preferred: Ability for occasional evening and weekend work with advance notice
    • Preferred: Familiarity with and proximity to the culture and landscapes of the service area (panhandle of WV, northern Shenandoah Valley, VA)
    • Preferred: Knowledge of conservation easements and Land Trust Alliance’s Standards and Practices.

    Benefits

    Compensation and Benefits

    • Hourly rate of $27 per hour, or the part-time equivalent of a full-time salary of $56,160 per year.
    • Part-time employees have the option to participate in our 403b retirement savings program with a 3% match from Potomac Conservancy
    • Largely remote work with site visits throughout the Potomac Watershed and occasional meetings in or near our Winchester, VA office.
