The Common Place, a faith-based non-profit in Southwest Philadelphia, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director of Development.

The Opportunity

The Common Place (TCP) invites candidates who are motivated, hard-working, and committed to the mission of TCP to join its executive leadership team as director of development. TCP serves children and their families in Southwest Philadelphia through educational programs, social service, collaboration, and faith formation. Our goal is to broaden their horizons through art, music, and faith, while providing nutritious meals and a safe place to be creative, explore their imaginations, and hone their academic skills and talents.

Founded in 2013, TCP has already made a dramatic difference in the lives of hundreds of children and families in Southwest Philadelphia (SWP). The vision of the board of trustees is to help SWP become a flourishing community, addressing the needs of children experiencing the realities of poverty, underfunded, underperforming, and overcrowded schools, and violence.

Inspired by the Old Testament Prophet Jeremiah, TCP is committed to “work for the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have called you… Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper” (Jeremiah 29:7).

The leadership of TCP is in the planning stage of a major gifts campaign, Reviving the Spirit of Hope. This comprehensive campaign will seek funding to:

  1. Establish a high-quality Preschool
  2. Launch a Produce Market
  3. Expand TCP’s After School Program to multiple sites
  4. Acquire and convert blighted lots and properties into Urban Farms

The successful candidate will work with the newly appointed executive director, Rev. Christopher Holland, a former board member of TCP. Chris is an inspirational leader, a life-long Philadelphian, and the executive pastor of Salt and Light Church, which shares space with TCP.

The Organization

The founding executive director of TCP, Mr. Peter Grim, provided excellent leadership during TCP’s formative years. He, along with TCP’s board chair, Rev. Casey Thompson, attracted the support of many members of Wayne Presbyterian Church where Pastor Thompson serves. Together, they raised the money needed to renovate a 100-plus-year-old church building, which now serves as the home of both TCP and Salt & Light Church, where board member Rev. Cean R. James serves as senior pastor.

As Mr. Grim handed the reigns of responsibility over to his successor, he said, “Over the years, Chris impressed me and the TCP board of trustees with his business acumen, leadership capabilities, and connection to the community. I fully endorse his capability to move TCP to the next step in the development of The Common Place organization and am excited to see what lies ahead.”

TCP is also blessed with a board of trustees that is fully committed, engaged, and deeply involved. With an annual operating budget of approximately $1.2M, TCP is poised to make an even greater impact on the community it loves and serves. An important responsibility for the director of development will be to broaden and deepen the base of donors to TCP.

The Position

This individual will report directly to the executive director and work closely with the development committee of the board of trustees and the campaign steering team for the Reviving the Spirit of Hope campaign. TCP is offering a generous and competitive salary package for this full-time position. It is expected that the successful candidate will need to invest 40-50 hours per week as the chief development officer, creating initiatives and strategies to meet the immediate and long-range funding goals of TCP. A complete position description is available upon request.

The Person

TCP is seeking a person with a maturing faith able to represent our organization with integrity. This individual must be an entrepreneurial self-starter, highly relational, capable of serving as a member of a team, and able to represent TCP positively in all public interactions. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, are essential for this important role. Attention to detail along with proficiency with Word, Excel, Google Drive, and donor management software are needed. (TCP currently uses Keela, a cloud-based donor management system.) College graduates and those with at least three years of fundraising experience are preferred.
