ProPublica is looking for a creative, empathetic and ambitious visuals editor to join our editorial visuals team through Dec. 31, 2021.

ProPublica’s investigative journalism does more than expose wrongdoing and injustice; we intend for it to spark real-world change. Visuals editors will work closely with the art director and the rest of the visuals team to find compassionate, incisive and original approaches to story presentation that rises to the level of the dedication of our fellow journalists. We’re looking for people with exceptional abilities to understand and interpret complex investigations, and to facilitate a meaningful and resonant presentation of a story. This role requires individual creative initiative, collaborative curiosity, enthusiasm and a rigorous commitment to the impact-based mission of ProPublica.

A successful candidate will have extensive experience commissioning outstanding editorial illustration, photography and other forms of visual storytelling, with a commitment to diversity and inclusion and care for the health and safety of those working in the field.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Confidence assigning projects to not only photojournalists, but photographers, directors and visual artists.
  • Experience commissioning or creating editorial illustrations, with attentiveness toward diversity and inclusion. You should have a track record of assigning to established agency-represented illustrators, as well as having a creative enthusiasm to confidently assign artists without editorial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing networks of diverse freelance visual journalists available for commissions.
  • Confidence with wire and archival photo research, as well as demonstrated competency negotiating licensing rights and mastery of copyright.
  • Strong time, project management and organizational skills. Because this is a news environment, ideal candidates should be confident working on multiple projects simultaneously, often with fast-paced deadlines.
  • Familiarity with compiling visual storyboards and writing creative project briefs.
  • Experience working with a modern web-based CMS like WordPress or Craft is a plus.

We know there are great candidates who may not fit into what we’ve described above or who have important skills we haven’t thought of. If that’s you, don’t hesitate to apply and tell us about yourself.

We are dedicated to improving our newsroom, in part by better reflecting the people we cover. (Here is a breakdown of our staff.) We are committed to diversity and building an inclusive environment for people of all backgrounds and ages. And we are taking steps to meet that commitment. We especially encourage members of traditionally underrepresented communities to apply, including women, people of color, LGBTQ people and people with disabilities.

If all of this sounds exciting to you, you can apply using this form. The most important part of it, by far, is your work examples. Typically that means your portfolio, but if you don’t have one, please send links or screenshots of projects you’ve worked on or contributed to in some way and describe your role in detail. You don’t have to have been the lead. We want to know what worked, what might not have and how your contribution fit into the context of what was needed for the project.

We will begin reviewing applications on May 31, 2021, but we will continue to consider candidates as long as the posting remains live on our site.

This job is full time and includes benefits and runs to Dec. 31, 2021. The position will be based in our New York office, but remote applicants are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S.

Questions? Send them to lisa.larson-walker@propublica.org. No phone calls, please.
