The Development & Communications Manager is a full time, exempt position at Real Change reporting to the Executive Director. The DCM will work closely with all departments and manage the development/communications department. As the Department Manager this position is responsible for the development and execution of a comprehensive, growth-oriented annual fundraising plan with categories including grants, major donor cultivation and stewardship, individual giving, institutional giving, and events. Contributed income exceeds $1M. 

The DCM will also oversee implementation of the annual Communications plan, including supervising the social media calendar, press relations, and other external communications. 

 

 

Working under Covid:

This position is required to be in the office a minimum of 3 days each week. Real Change takes Covid very seriously; we require masks, work schedules are staggered to limit the number of people in the office, we utilize air purifiers, have a daily sanitation routine, use plexiglass around high traffic areas, and monitor staff for any Covid symptoms. The job description represents current work duties, and may shift some during Covid so that we can effectively meet our mission and serve our Vendor population.

 

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

 

Fund Development (45%)

  • Develop and oversee grants calendar, draft and submit grant proposals, and build relationships with foundation officers
  • Conduct annual fund drives and develop written materials including, but not limited to, annual report, drive-related appeals, and marketing materials  
  • Manage Raiser’s Edge donor database and generate reports to track fundraising effectiveness
  • Maintain and enhance institutional giving vehicles, including workplace giving and car donations programs
  • Keep abreast of industry trends and possible new revenue sources
  • Expand our 1,300+ individual donor base through donor development, expanded reader support, and increased mail and on-line giving
  • Develop and manage fundraising committee to engage board members and other volunteers in Real Change fundraising. Provide fundraising training materials for board and committee members  
  • Work with other departments to ensure the development perspective is represented in decisions related to volunteer management, marketing, advocacy, and the newspaper
  • Supervise the Development & Communications Associate as well as interns and volunteers

 

Communications and External Partnerships (30%)

  • Develop and ensure implementation of annual communications plan and budget
  • Increase visibility of Real Change through public events, in the press, on all social media channels, and with external partners as needed
  • Coordinate and collaborate with department heads to ensure program priorities, calls to action, and community engagement opportunities are represented externally
  • Periodically write organizational updates, letters to community, or op-eds in Real Change Newspaper

 

Event Management (10%)

  • Develop and execute Real Change’s long running Annual Fundraiser
  • Plan and execute stewardship activities and events that promote donor retention, as well as increased philanthropy and levels of personal involvement
  • Develop and support organization’s events as needed

 

Leadership and Administration (15%)

  • Hire, train, and supervise program staff, interns, volunteers and vendor leaders; actively support employee growth and development and conduct evaluations
  • Participate in executing RC’s strategic planning goals and objectives
  • Serve on at least one cross-departmental committee
  • Create and manage department budgets
  • Other activities as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of development experience in a nonprofit, educational or public service environment
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to frame appeals and articulate organizational values and priorities in writing and orally
  • 2 years of database management 
  • Basic graphic design & layout skills
  • Ability to work in a hectic, busy, sometimes loud workspace
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial, social and economic justice

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Media and communications experience, preferred
  • Raiser’s Edge CRM experience
  • Work, volunteer or lived experience with homelessness

USD 56,000 - USD 64,000

Benefits

Compensation: Salary range is $56,000 - $64,000. Benefit package includes Health and Dental coverage, generous PTO - 3 weeks’ vacation, 2 weeks’ sick, 10 holidays, 403B Retirement Fund with a 4% Real Change contribution, flexible work schedule and professional development funds.
