Reports to Executive Director
Supervises Development and Communications Coordinator
Basic Functions Working with the Executive Director (ED), Chief Financial Officer, and the Board’s Development and Governance Committees, the Director of Development and Communications (DDC) is a key member of the NCS leadership team and an active participant in strategic planning for the agency. In partnership with the ED, s/he is responsible for all fundraising, development and communications activities. S/he will help forge new relationships that will build NCS’s visibility, impact, and financial resources and position the agency for substantial growth. The DDC is responsible for securing funding from diverse sources (individual, philanthropic, corporate, government); managing cultivation of and relationships with donors; overseeing communications and marketing; and serving as liaison to NCS Board members and the Board’s Development Committee. The ideal candidate will be creative and entrepreneurial.
Donor Cultivation and Stewardship
o Work actively with the ED, senior staff and Board to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy and goals, to include corporate, foundation, government and individual support. Create annual Development Plan.
o Develop and implement a stewardship program designed to deepen ties with existing donors and identify and cultivate new ones.
o With the ED, lead agency in embarking on ambitious leadership giving campaign.
o Research, identify, and help Board members and ED solicit major gift prospects.
o Work with the ED and the Development Committee on fundraising performance metrics, dashboards, and reports.
o Create and manage fundraising campaigns, identify consultants (when needed), and track campaign results.
o Plan and execute agency fundraising events, including: venues, budgets, goals, committees, materials, and follow-up. Enlists event honorees, sponsors, donors, and committee members.
o Primary responsibility for development of all funding proposals and RFPs. Oversee consultant(s) where applicable.
o With Director of Human Resources and Volunteers, cultivate a volunteer network to enhance the agency’s programs and expand its potential philanthropic network.
o Work with the Governance Committee, Board members and ED to identify and cultivate potential new Board members, including members of agency’s young professionals network.
o Serve as liaison to Board Development Committee.
Communication and Marketing
o Develop and implement a public relations and communications strategy that enhances the agency’s visibility and communicates key messages.
o Coordinate the creation and production of signature program, communications and marketing materials, including website, brochures, newsletters, video, press releases, social media, etc. Ensure consistency with NCS “brand” and message.
o Oversee management of donor database and gift acknowledgments.
o At least four years of progressively responsible Development experience.
o A record of donor cultivation, stewardship and fundraising success. Demonstrated success managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources, expanding existing relationships and developing new ones.
o Strong knowledge of NY philanthropic community.
o BA/BS required; additional relevant advanced degrees or credentials preferred.
o Excellent communications and presentation skills (written and verbal).
o Strong organizational and time management skills
o Proficient in Raiser’s Edge and other relevant software and technology (MS Office, social media).
o High energy, entrepreneurial self-starter and enthusiasm for NCS’s mission.
o Sense of humor required.
