During the 2017-18 school year, Turnaround partnered with schools in New York City, Newark, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., serving more than 5,000 students and 600 adults. The organization currently provides hands-on professional support, coaching and training to leadership teams and educators working in New York City and District of Columbia public schools (NYC DOE and DCPS), for the KIPP DC charter network and for Summit Public Schools in Silicon Valley.

Position Overview

The Vice President of Development will lead the Development team, which is responsible for raising the private philanthropic and competitive public revenue to meet the organization’s short-term and long-term needs through building and managing relationships with foundations, corporations, individuals, and public agencies. The Vice President of Development will work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Development team to develop an innovative fundraising strategy, pitch to donors, and effectively close multi-year, multi-million-dollar gifts primarily from individuals and institutions.

 

A critical component of the role is the leadership of the major gifts strategy including execution of that strategy through cultivating, soliciting and stewarding high net worth individuals. The Vice President is the strategic thought leader, resident expert, and driving force behind all work related to meeting aggressive revenue targets that will allow the organization to expand its reach and impact. This position will report to the CEO and will manage a four-person development team.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, multi-year strategic development plan designed to meet aggressive goals for growth and diversification across private philanthropic (i.e., institutions, individuals, and special events) and public (i.e., competitive public grants) revenue streams to meet annual and long-term operating needs, including an $11 million revenue goal. In particular, design and lead the long-term strategy to increase the amount of dollars raised from individual donors.
  • Manage and deploy a team of development professionals who are executing the organization’s private and public revenue strategy. Lead, manage, and inspire staff to continue to be a high performing and results oriented team. Clearly communicate objectives and support people in reaching them while also providing opportunities for professional growth.  
  • Partner with the Board of Directors, President/CEO, regional Executive Directors, and other senior leaders to maintain and expand the organization’s donor base and support the overall development effort.
  • Partner with Finance team on all budgeting, revising of projections, and setting financial strategy. Also partner with the Finance team to report on the organization’s progress toward both annual and long-term revenue targets to the organization’s senior leadership team, Board of Directors, and other key stakeholders
  • Oversee day-to-day development activities, including submission of proposal and reports, major gift solicitation, various cultivation and stewardship activities (e.g., special events, one-on-one meetings, school visits, etc.), internal development systems and operations (e.g., database implementation and maintenance). Ensure maintenance of fundraising systems and structures that have been strengthened over the last few years.

 

Required Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented professional who takes an entrepreneurial, business development/revenue generation approach to development. Specifically, s/he must have:

 

  • A comprehensive understanding of high quality fundraising strategies to drive revenue generation in innovative and strategic ways. Experience leading a comprehensive development effort and building a major gifts program required.
  • A front-line fundraiser who has proven experience in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewardship of a portfolio of major donors. Experience raising six- and seven- figure gifts and meeting aggressive revenue targets year over year.
  • Highly developed strategic thinking skills with an ability to analyze the existing donor base and determine the most effective way to expand it given the available human and financial resources.
  • A sense of urgency in relationship to Turnaround’s work and a deep-seated commitment to supporting Turnaround’s mission and living the organization’s core values. Preference for experience in the education sector.
  • Highly developed oral and written communications skills. 
  • Experience managing and/or working with a Board of Directors, CEO and other senior leaders in an organization, effectively deploying them in service of fundraising as appropriate.
  • An excellent team player with a positive attitude and the ability to connect and collaborate with others.
  • Strong leadership and management experience with a particular ability to set and communicate priorities and inspire a team of dedicated professionals to new levels of achievement.
  • Demonstrated achievement in a demanding work environment.
  • Very well organized, with systematic and meticulous attention to details.
  • Flexible and adaptable. Able to work with ambiguity and changing conditions and priorities.
