Neighbors Immigration Clinic welcomes immigrants to Kentucky by providing low-cost and free, high- quality immigration legal services, education, and advocacy. We are an independent non-profit 501(c)3 organization with connections to a national network called Justice for Our Neighbors.


Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Staff Attorney is responsible for their legal casework within Neighbors. All legal decisions made on individual cases fall under the authority of the Staff Attorney.


This position is based in Lexington and will require occasional evenings and weekends with frequent travel requirements. Access to reliable transportation is necessary as the position also involves planning and implementing community-based legal work at off-site clinic locations. 


Duties

  • Maintain a robust case load focusing on humanitarian immigration, including VAWA petitions, U Visa, Special Immigrant Juvenile, T Visa, Asylum, Removal Defense, as well as a limited number of family-based immigration cases. Work requires meeting with clients for initial consultations and preparing applications for submission to USCIS as well as court filings and representation before EOIR.
  • Appellate work (BIA, Federal District Court, 6th Circuit Court of Appeals) as necessary.
  • Occasionally represent juveniles before family and probate courts for matters ancillary to immigration legal work. 
  • Help coordinate and attend evening and/or weekend immigration consultation legal clinics held in Somerset and Covington with the intention of expanding the geographic reach of our services.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and the board of directors in developing programs and services. 
  • Perform administrative duties and paralegal functions for the majority of cases.
  • Train office volunteers and interns concerning administrative duties. 
  • Conduct community outreach presentations on issues surrounding immigration. Some presentations may be in Spanish or languages other than English and may occur during evening/weekend hours.
  • Assist the Executive Director in fundraising efforts including events, direct asks, grant applications and reporting.
  • Engage in legislative and executive branch advocacy and education on relevant public policy issues as needed. 
  • Maintain an awareness and understanding of current legal and policy issues affecting immigrants in Kentucky. 
  • Supervise and work with volunteer attorneys, student attorneys, and pro bono counsel; Develop and foster relationships with volunteer attorneys and local pro bono counsel.


Qualifications 

  • Must be licensed to practice law in one of the 50 U.S. States or awaiting Bar results.
  • Strong oral and written advocacy skills. 
  • Spanish proficiency preferred. 
  • Immigration experience preferred. 
  • Hard working, flexible, able to carry a heavy caseload and to work as a team member in a small office.  
  • Self motivated and independent worker.
  • Strong public speaking skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to public interest law.
  • Ability to work with volunteers.
  • Ability to work extensively with trauma victims.
  • Strong interpersonal skills needed to interact with clients and staff. 
  • Ability to work with staff and clients of diverse nationalities, cultures, religions, and beliefs. 
  • Comfort working with limited-English-proficient clients (experience communicating through interpreters will be helpful). 
  • Strong outreach skills; ability to network with other agencies and partners. 
  • Patience and strong commitment to client care.
  • Have a valid driver's license and access to a dependable vehicle.  
  • Comfort with and ability to work on computers is required for this position. We regularly utilize Microsoft Office programs, Dropbox, and G Suite.
