Communications Director Job Description

MLICCI seeks a full-time Communications Director to support our mission:

The Mississippi Low Income Child Care Initiative (MLICCI) is a statewide non-profit public policy advocacy organization working to improve women’s economic security in Mississippi by making child care affordable for low-income working moms, achieving gender and racial equity in the workforce and making the safety net work for women.

The Communications Director plays a critical role in shaping and advancing MLICCI’s work. The Communications Director will be expected to take an active role in MLICCI’s advocacy work and will engage with all of MLICCI’s staff to develop a holistic understanding of MLICCI’s work.         

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

-         Use communications tools to advance advocacy goals

-         Work with staff to develop short-term communications goals and a long-term communications strategy that will promote MLICCI’s work and advocacy goals

-         Educate partners and media about issues advanced by MLICCI

-         Update and maintain website

-         Update and/or create social media presence, including blogs

-         Develop policies for social media

-         Create consistent communication vehicle (email, newsletter, etc.) for keeping constituents informed and updated and engaged in MLICCI’s work

-         Help develop and organize events and communication that raise the profile of MLICCI

-         Develop a network of constituents who are willing to serve as contacts for media

-         Write press releases and coordinate and respond to media as needed

-         Increase constituency engagement

-         Update, organize and maintain contact lists

-         Provide graphic design, or facilitate when needed, for reports, fact sheets, etc.

Qualifications

MLICCI is search of a Communications Director who is committed to MLICCI’s mission and to improving the lives of women in Mississippi. Communications experience with a nonprofit policy advocacy organization is preferred. The Communications Director must work in a collaborative style, as they will be expected to work with all MLICCI’s programmatic staff and its external partners. Experience developing and implementing communications strategies, such as issue awareness campaigns, is preferred.

The candidate must have excellent writing, editing, and verbal communications skills. The candidate must have experience managing and executing across several communications media, including social media. Qualified candidates must have the ability to prioritize complicated, time-sensitive tasks and follow-through effectively.
