Heading Home is Boston’s leading provider of housing and support services for infants to elderly – a champion of innovative solutions that move people through and out of homelessness. Heading Home provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, permanent housing, and supportive services to 1,400 homeless and formerly homeless families and individuals in Greater Boston, annually. The supportive services alongside housing helps clients create futures without homelessness. On any given night, Heading Home clients include 480+ households living stably with support in Greater Boston neighborhoods.

Our team strategy is to engage in multi-level relationship building to deepen commitments and drive earned attention. Meeting annual department fundraising goals of $3m+ is driven by building and sustaining value-based partnerships.

With a passion for donor-centered engagement, the Senior Director of Corporate and Foundations (SDCF) will play a pivotal role in cultivating and stewarding meaningful relationships with private, family, community, and corporate foundations, resulting in raising $1m from this network of current and engaged partners. Managing a portfolio of 100 institutional relationships, the SDCF will identify and implement best practices for all aspects of fundraising including strategic prospect development, moves management, and pipeline planning.

With management oversight of the grantmaking process, the SDCF will ensure well-matched and on-time submissions, as well as award compliance. She/he will coordinate closely with HH’s Volunteer Engagement Specialist to provide exceptional volunteer experiences for corporate partners. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a fast-paced, collaborative, and creative fundraising team to help build partnerships and drive revenues that support the critically important work of HH.

A keen curiosity about, and interest in, Heading Home’s programs is critical to success in this role. Promoting and cultivating positive relationships with clients and staff will be essential.  She/he will be highly relational with exceptional listening skills and genuine interest in others.  She/he will demonstrate fluency in creative problem solving, have detailed organizational and project management skills, and a genuine interest in being part of a building development effort.   

The SDCF will

  • Sustain and grow institutional funding, meeting annual goals of $1m in revenue generation via grants and multi-year support
  • Lead HH’s stewardship of all institutional grants and gifts
  • Bring institutional fundraising processes to this opportunity
  • Identify and cultivate 25 key relationships for multi-year gifts and/or substantial growth
  • Collaborate with the team’s Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications by qualifying prospect/donor needs and collaborating on positioning and deadlines
  • Further diversify support base by generating funding from life sciences, health care, and financial services sectors
  • Share HH’s values on inclusivity and equity 

Relationship Management and Goal Achievement

  • Conduct all institutional research and develop and execute individual strategies to include grant submission, sponsorship opportunities, employee match programs, cause marketing, and volunteer engagement
  • Steward an existing portfolio of 50 institutional donors via individualized engagement plans that include quarterly check-ins with data, stories, and for discovery purposes
  • Strategically use the Chief Development Officer and the HH leadership team to further advance relationships

Deliver on the annual institutional fundraising goals that contribute to overall department revenue goals

  • Fulfill general operating support goals while looking for select funding opportunities that advance agency strategies
  • Develop a portfolio of 20-40 prospects annually, to broaden and diversify Heading Home’s donor base
  • Serve as primary liaison to the HH Junior Board, overseeing this group’s fundraisers, developing individual engagement plans and supporting events
  • Plan and host donor cultivation events, including site tours, volunteer projects and home gatherings
  • Oversee and leverage Heading Home volunteer events including Back to School, Heading Home for the Holidays, International Women’s Day, and Up & Outs, as critical prospect engagement and donor stewardship strategies.
  • Ensure donor information is captured in Raiser’s Edge and uses system to assist with moves management and donor profiling

Events Strategy and Solicitation

  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer to set event strategy including: revenue goals, solicitation approach, stewardship, and post event evaluation and analysis
  • Initiate event sponsorship solicitations, using Heading Home events as engagement tools for corporate support and stewardship

Staff Management and Evaluation

  • Manage, coach, and support HH’s Volunteer Engagement Associate positively, meeting weekly and as needed to oversee workload and ensure coordination of responsibilities
  • Work with Chief Development Officer to evaluate staff performance and encourage professional growth


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 5 to 7 years of experience working in development including building corporate partnership
  • Demonstrated success building long-term relationships, making five figure asks and raising at least $1 million annually
  • Demonstrated ability to create and execute fundraising strategies including a track-record of successful proposal development and grant awards
  • Superior interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience, with strong abilities to manage, coach, and rapidly develop the skills of direct report
  • Excellent project management skills, including prioritizing and managing competing deadlines within a fast-paced environment
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Suite and CRM, preferably Raisers Edge
  • A valid Massachusetts driver’s license in good standing and access to a car
  • Able to lift at least 40 pounds
