The Nutrition Specialist is responsible for the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Cooking Matters Program, mobile nutrition classes, and general nutrition education in the community. This position will primarily deliver educational programming to the public to improve healthy food and lifestyle choices among at-risk families and individuals. The position delivers existing evidence –based, nationally recognized curricula to the community by collaborating with preschools, K-12 schools, AFFB partner agencies and programs, health care providers and other human service organizations.
· Administer, implement, coordinate and oversee all assigned programs
- Coordinates all activities within assigned program(s) to ensure quality and completion of activities.
- Coordinates all day-to-day aspects of assigned program(s) and works in partnership with other staff to achieve program and organizational goals and organizational objectives.
· Program Delivery
- Implement established educational programming and program activities in support of AFFB’s nutrition programming efforts.
- Utilize existing program materials and educational framework to teach a targeted number of both adult and youth participants.
- Coordinate, compile and organize program resources and materials for implementation.
- Transport program materials and resources as needed in the delivery of the program.
- Apply established subject matter knowledge to create lesson plans and/or new curricula, as needed.
- Create and/or convene community groups or partner agencies with the focus on creating community-wide nutrition education initiatives.
- Serve as a subject matter resource in the area of nutrition to AFFB staff, participants, community organizations and the general public.
- Coordinate the recruitment of volunteers, create training curricula and provide training to ensure consistency in curricula implementation.
- Program Evaluation and General Program Administration
- Interact with program participants to obtain evaluation data, to include: evaluating effectiveness of classes and instructors within all program areas.
- Input data into electronic database system.
- Writes program reports and performed program data analysis as needed. Based on analysis, assist in making recommendations for improvements in program offerings.
- Compile and report program impact/numbers reached in quarter and other reports as requested.
- Relationship Management:
- Represent AFFB in the community, respond to requests for a guest speaker or information on nutrition.
- Build and manage quality relationships with identified partners crucial to the successful implementation of the assigned program(s) through regular meetings and frequent communication.
- Identify potential new partners in the community and initiate new collaborations where possible and appropriate.
- Ensure all host site agreements are completed and processed in a timely manner.
- Partner with participating schools and other community-based organizations serving the identified target population/area specific to program(s).
- Serve as preceptor to dietetic interns and provide them with experiences in food banking and community nutrition. Utilize interns in ways that draw from their strengths and contribute to nutrition projects and programs.
· Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly facility adhering to all food safety standards and regulations.
· Coordinate with the Development team in managing key donor relationships, coordinating with media and supporting applicable fundraising events/activities.
· Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition, dietetics or related field. Registered Dietitian required.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in community health, community education, food banking, or nutrition.
- Demonstrated ability in both written and verbal communication and public speaking.
- Ability to conduct surveys, program evaluation and research.
- Computer literacy required.
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals of diverse socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to recruit and manage a large cadre of volunteers.
- Ability to think creatively and strategically, both individually and as part of a team.
- Ability to meet travel and time requirements as evening and occasional weekend work is required. Valid driver’s license required.
· Demonstrated cooking knowledge and skill is a plus.
· Training/teaching experience.
· Bilingual skills are a plus.
