Description

The Opportunity

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC) seeks a mid-level attorney to join our efforts to defend and advance reproductive justice and gender equity in California, as well as to work on other ACLU-NC priority issues. The attorney will pursue and help develop impact litigation and policy advocacy under the supervision of the Reproductive Justice and Gender Equity Director. The position will be based in our San Francisco office.

The Approach

You are a self-motivated, critical thinker who is a passionate advocate for reproductive justice, gender equity, and other civil rights and civil liberties. You excel at legal research, writing, and oral communication, take a solutions-oriented approach, and exercise sound independent judgment to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

The Position

You are a member of the ACLU-NC Legal-Policy department and of the statewide Reproductive Justice and Gender Equity team. The team employs integrated litigation, policy advocacy, organizing, and communications strategies to eliminate barriers to gender equity, secure reproductive rights, and ensure that those rights can be exercised by all Californians with dignity and freedom from discrimination or coercion. Current areas of focus for the Reproductive Justice and Gender Equity team include challenging restrictions on reproductive health care by hospitals and other providers; preserving California’s strong laws on access to reproductive health care from federal threats; protecting the reproductive rights of people in the criminal justice system; and ending pregnancy and workplace discrimination. In addition to working on reproductive justice and gender equity, you will have the opportunity to work on other ACLU-NC issues—including immigration, economic justice, criminal justice, and freedom of speech and expression—as the need arises.

Our mission is to ensure that Constitutional rights don’t just exist on paper, but are protected in practice. As we move into a new era and face dangerous policies that threaten our civil rights and civil liberties, we remain dedicated to confronting these issues and defending the progress we have made.
