State and Local Grants Manager

The American Battlefield Trust, the nation’s premier historic land preservation nonprofit, seeks a State and Local Grants Manager to obtain project funding from state and local grant programs and manage all aspects of the grant programs’ cycles, including but not limited to submitting applications, individual grant reporting, grant disbursements, and closeout. With approximately 50,000 members nationwide, the Trust enjoys substantial support from individuals, foundations, and state, local and federal governmental entities for its preservation projects. Government grants account for a significant portion of the Trust’s funding for nearly all the Trust’s projects.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Researching grant application requirements and terms, which may include compliance with local comprehensive plans, state natural heritage data maps, and other state and local resources
  • Coordinating internal and inter-departmental review of projects
  • Drafting and compiling grant applications, required grant application support documentation, support letters, and project budgets
  • Developing and maintaining grant-tracking spreadsheets
  • Proactively monitoring and facilitating grant approval processes and awards
  • Completing all grant award disbursements and submitting deliverables for closeout
  • Working closely with Trust’s Policy Department on program issues and reporting
  • Communicating with state and local grant officials
  • Researching and pursuing new state and local grant programs for battlefield, historic land, open space preservation and environmental protection/water quality/mitigation programs in selected states and localities
  • Developing relationships with local partner organizations on joint grant applications and preservation efforts
  • Supporting internal land preservation projects

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Ability to establish excellent working relationships & meet project deadlines
  • Familiarity with GIS/GPS
  • Superior research, writing and presentation skills
  • B.A./B.S. degree
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in real estate transactions, project or grants management, or related work
  • Land preservation experience is a plus
  • A passion to save American history is essential
  • Salary is commensurate with experience
