Position Description

Abriendo Mentes is currently seeking a Development and Communications Associate to join our growing team in Guanacaste, Costa Rica as a contract position. The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be to lead the organization’s fundraising initiatives, and secondary responsibilities will be to manage internal and external communications. This position reports to the Executive Director and involves managing online fundraising campaigns, individual and corporate donors, fundraising events and grant writing, as well as composes, edits, and manages the production of a full range of material to effectively support the advancement goals of Abriendo Mentes and to convey our mission to diverse constituencies.

List of Key Fundraising Responsibilities (required):

  • Develop and oversee Abriendo Mentes’ annual fundraising program
  • Identify prospective individual and corporate donors and develop strategies to cultivate those relationships
  • Maintain ongoing communications with private and corporate donors
  • Collaborate with staff on the management and planning of fundraising events
  • Ensure timely and accurate report and acknowledgment deliveries to funders
  • Research and write new grant applications

List of Key Communications Responsibilities (desired):

  • Effectively create material for and manage social media content, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Create print and online communication materials (including monthly newsletter and website) to deliver clear messaging about the impact and importance of Abriendo Mentes’ work to both stakeholders and program participants

Required Qualifications:

  • Must embrace the mission of Abriendo Mentes
  • Knowledge of fund-raising techniques including, but not limited to: proposal writing, prospect research, and donor relations and stewardship
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of oral and written communications and interpersonal relations
  • Advanced technology skills, including experience with donor database management
  • Have the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships
  • Be a “self-starter” and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
  • Be organized and exhibit “follow through” on tasks and goals
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability
  • Fluent English speaker with knowledge of Spanish language
  • Personable and well-spoken
  • Must be comfortable with public speaking
  • Extreme organizational skills
  • Ability to work and solve problems independently
  • Bachelor’s degree required

Additional Desired Skills:

  • Experience in Graphic Design
  • Experience working with Wordpress and website design/management
  • Experience in non-profit industry
  • Knowledge of the education and social welfare system in Guanacaste, Costa Rica helpful
  • Experience in creating graphics and content for social media and other print and online communications

Position Details:

  • Position located in Playa Potrero, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
  • Flexible Schedule: expected that the ideal candidate would need to dedicate about 40 hours per week to complete required tasks.
  • AM Office hours: generally Monday-Friday 9am-5pm.  Some nights and weekends may be required
  • Compensation: $850/month USD net (contract position) plus potential to earn a year end bonus after fundraising goals have been met
  • Start Date: January 9, 2018
  • Contract duration: One year - with option to extend based on performance
