Development Assistant Job Description

Legal Outreach History and Mission:

Legal Outreach is a college preparatory organization whose mission is to change the educational trajectory of urban youth from under-resourced communities and facilitate the pursuit of higher education by using legal and educational programs as tools for fostering vision, developing skills, and enhancing confidence.

Legal Outreach’s formation dates back to 1982, the year Legal Outreach co-Founder and Executive Director, James O’Neal, graduated from Harvard Law School and came to New York as Harvard’s first Public Interest Law Fellowship recipient. Determined to serve at-risk teens, he taught law to students in Harlem, Bedford-Stuyvesant and the South Bronx. The organization now serves poor and minority students from Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. In 1993, Legal Outreach graduated its first class from the four-year College Bound Program. Since then, 684 students have completed the college bound program, with 99% attending college, and 94% graduating from college. More than half of the program’s graduates have matriculated to top-ranked colleges and universities, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Williams, Amherst, Swarthmore, Cornell, NYU, Georgetown, Duke, Smith, Bryn Mawr, Wellesley, Wesleyan, Smith, Mount Holyoke, and many more.

Since its establishment, Legal Outreach has relied heavily on the strength of commitments from New York Institutions to supplement the various curricula and bring the law to life for young people. Legal Outreach’s partners include 7 law schools, 35 law firms, 2 governmental agencies, 3 public interest organizations, 9 judges, 4 real estate firms, 4 corporations and 182 attorney and law student volunteers.

Legal Outreach has been recognized as one of the top college access organizations in New York, and across the country. We have been awarded the American Bar Association Alexander Award for Excellence in the Diversity Pipeline, and have been recognized as one of the top performing college access programs in New York City by Root Cause Social Impact Research.
