The Economic Justice Organizer will co-lead ICIJ’s Vendor Justice Campaign, which aims to organize hundreds of street and home food vendors in the Inland Empire to increase their economic security and defend their right to make a living. The EJ Organizer will conduct outreach and education efforts to vendors throughout the region, organize a membership base of vendors, and coordinate rapid response efforts in support of vendors facing unjust enforcement operations. The EJ Organizer will also co-lead ICIJ’s Vendor Entrepreneurship Program, which will provide immigrant food vendors with entrepreneurship training and micro-grants for their businesses. They will organize and empower street vendors to take active leadership roles in their communities. They will remain in close communication with ICIJ partners, community members, and leaders to expand and maintain an active network of supporters for street and home food vendors. 

The EJ Organizer is a full-time, exempt position supervised by the ICIJ Policy Manager. The individual is expected to uphold the values and mission of ICIJ in their daily work. We expect individuals to represent ideals of integrity, respect, accountability, compassion and leadership. This position requires an energetic individual who has excellent bilingual (Spanish/English) oral presentation skills and is excited to work with a wide range of community members. The EJ Organizer is an entry-to-mid level position with a lot of room for growth, especially for those interested in leading groups, developing and managing work plans, and building a career as a community leader. 

Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement ICIJ’s Vendor Justice Campaign
  • Expand the base of organized street vendors throughout the IE; 
  • Assist in the development of bilingual outreach and education materials on topics related to street and home food vending;
  • Coordinate vendor membership meetings and maintain consistent communication with vendors (50-200 people);
  • Provide organizing trainings to street and home food vendors;
  • Develop relationships and advocate with local elected leaders and regulators on policies and regulations that impact street vendors;
  • Rapid response for emergency situations related to enforcement;
  • Stay informed of all developments regarding street and home food vending, including policy changes in the Inland Empire, code enforcement operations, and other challenges faced by street and home food vendors; 
  • Work with ICIJ communications team to promote the Vendor Justice Campaign and vendors graduating from the entrepreneurship program across ICIJ’s social media platforms, including community education about the rights of street and home food vendors. 
  • Co-lead and implement ICIJ’s Vendor Entrepreneurship Training Program
  • Support the coordination of entrepreneurship trainings led by ICIJ partners for our street and home food vendor members (including recruitment, technical assistance, and cohort development);
  • Coordinate a training application process, including the process to disburse micro-grants to graduating vendors. 
  • Assist street and home food vendors with acquiring equipment for their businesses (such as state-approved vending carts), food vending licenses, and addressing other safety issues that impact them;
  • Collaborate with community partners to maintain accurate participant and group coaching data, including attendance rosters, evaluations, coaching notes, and micro-grant disbursement;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of experience in popular education, program implementation and evaluation, advocacy, campaign organizing, and/or organizing frontline communities;
  • Interest and experience in economic development, social enterprise development, immigrant justice;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and fully bilingual in English and Spanish;
  • Knowledge of the Inland Empire political environment;
  • Proficient computer skills and prior experience or aptitude with internet applications including email, social networking systems, mobile platforms, and some web applications;
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Ability to work independently, cooperatively, and effectively with public, staff, and volunteers.
  • Valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation;

USD 60,000 - USD 65,000

Benefits

Salary and benefits: ICIJ offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. The salary range for this position is $60,000 - $65,000 along with employer-paid medical insurance, 15 paid holidays, and up to two weeks of paid vacation a year with an opportunity to accrue more after serving two years with the organization.
