The Policing Project at New York University School of Law is seeking an experienced professional to support external-facing communication functions as the Communications Manager. An ideal candidate will have experience employing effective and nimble communications processes, establishing strategic relationships with reporters, writing communication materials for funder, policymaker and advocacy audiences, following brand identity standards, and running digital communications alongside traditional communication tactics to maximize impact.

Background on the Policing Project

The Policing Project partners with communities and police across the country to promote public safety through transparency, equity and democratic engagement. We bring an innovative and creative approach to this area, one grounded in democratic values.

Broadly speaking, our work has three focus areas:

1.     Front-End Voice in Policing: In a democratic society, the public must have a voice in how it is policed. This is particularly so for Black communities and all communities of color, who historically have been under-served and over-policed.

2.     Regulation of Policing Technology: As law enforcement increasingly relies on surveillance technology—from social media monitoring to face recognition—it is essential to ensure that these technologies are used responsibly, and with minimal impact on civil rights and civil liberties.

3.     Re-Imagining Public Safety: It is past time for a national conversation about what public safety for everyone looks like, and how it is best achieved. We are developing ways to help communities address social problems without a law enforcement response, and in so doing reallocate resources in ways that benefit everyone.

In pursing these goals, we use a variety of tools to do our work, among them social science research, direct engagement with private companies and law enforcement agencies, drafting model legislation and testifying, and litigation. We work in close collaboration with groups from across the ideological spectrum and with stakeholders that often find themselves at odds, including policing agencies, community-based organizations, governments, makers of policing technology and other non-profits.

We have grown rapidly since our founding six years ago. We’re looking for a mission-driven person to manage our digital communications and help us advance our mission.

Job Description & Responsibilities:

The Communications Manager will report to the Policing Project’s Chief of Staff and will be responsible for:

·        Creating and managing online content for the Policing Project, including on our website, newsletter, and social media accounts;

·        Developing and executing digital campaigns for our programs;

·        Implementing earned media strategies to secure media coverage, including identifying opportunities, building and maintaining media lists, drafting and pitching materials, and responding to requests;

·        Assisting with editing and proofing our publications;

·        Creating new collateral to describe the Policing Project’s work and share new developments in a way that is compelling and relevant to priority audiences;

·        Assisting with the design of our publications and managing external designers for more complex projects;

·        Assisting with our public events, as needed.

Desired Experience, Skills and Qualifications:

We seek the following skills and qualifications:

·        At least 2 years of relevant professional experience in media or communications, preferably with a non-profit, government or academic institution;

·        Exceptional communication skills, including the ability to reflect nuanced issues in a meaningful way for a wide range of formats and audiences (understanding of the issues relevant to the Policing Project’s mission is a plus);

·        Excellent organizational skills and ability to triage competing deadlines;

·        Experience using a variety of communication channels including digital channels (must have social media and email newsletter experience; website experience a plus);

·        Basic ability to use design programs such as Canva and Adobe Suite to create professional-looking collateral;

·        Basic CSS and website maintenance skills a plus; and

·        Ability to work independently and on teams, and respond well to guidance and direction;

$55,000 - $70,000Salary is commensurate with experience
