OVERVIEW

Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2020, the San Francisco Green Film Festival is seeking an Executive Director to be responsible for the overall financial and operational health of the organization. The Executive Director will have overall strategic, fundraising, financial, and operational responsibilities for SFGFF’s consistent world-class programs. The position reports to the board of directors and is supported by advisory committees and staff.

As we are transitioning from a decade of leadership by the festival’s founder, we seek a confident leader who is passionate about our mission who can focus on fundraising and long-term sustainability as they build upon the organization’s reputation and success.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO GREEN FILM FESTIVAL

The San Francisco Green Film Festival is a 501(c)(3) committed to using the power of film to bring audiences into the global conversation on environmental solutions. As we approach our 10th anniversary, we are expanding our reputation as a leading force for environmental justice, strengthening communities, and growing the green movement.

In addition to producing our signature program, the annual Green Film Festival in September, we screen films and support filmmakers throughout the year, connecting thousands of people through our programs.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

DEVELOPMENT AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS
  • Lead all development initiatives, including membership building, major donor giving, grant writing and sponsorship strategies to ensure the organization’s long-term financial security and increase contributed and earned income
  • Cultivate productive, long-term partnerships with grantmaking organizations, corporate sponsors and other funders
ORGANIZATION BUILDING
  • Provide executive leadership for SFGFF, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization with 3 employees; a team of 40+ volunteers, freelancers and contractors; and an annual budget of around $300,000
  • Be responsible for the structuring of the organization and recruitment and development of staff and volunteers
  • Be responsible for all financial matters, including the preparation of budgets and accounts for board approval and monitoring activities against agreed-upon budgets and timelines
STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP
  • Effectively represent SFGFF with donors, government, foundations, sponsors, and community partners, as well as the general public
  • Drive the organization’s vision and strategy and build upon SFGFF’s program initiatives, ensuring they retain their leading status
  • Collaborate with board and staff in designing and implementing strategic plans and actions that further SFGFF’s mission
  • Report regularly to the board of directors, prepare agendas and documents for board meetings, and work with the board chair to maximize the input and effectiveness of board member participation
PROJECT DEVELOPMENT/MANAGEMENT
  • Manage team to meet milestones and deadlines in producing the annual festival and year-round events
  • Ensure excellence in programming
  • Oversee marketing strategy and implementation, including branding, design, advertising, PR and internal and member communications

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Excellent management and leadership skills, ideally in related arts/environment sectors
  • Strong skills and demonstrated success in fundraising, especially major gift and sponsorship solicitation and cultivation
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to manage, and deliver on, competing deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all audiences through public speaking and writing
  • Creativity and eagerness to collaborate with board and staff in designing and implementing a new strategic plan
  • Proven track record of managing teams and leading complex projects and initiatives
  • Experience in business planning and financial management; Ability to balance the delivery of programs against budget realities
  • Ability to use data and metrics to measure program effectiveness and organizational progress against goals
  • Willingness to work atypical hours with events and commitments commonly occurring on the weekend or the evenings

PREFERRED

  • Experience of financial management within a 501(c)3 organization
  • Experience coordinating and producing large-scale programs, festivals or events
  • Experience in the environmental sector with good networks and contacts
  • Working knowledge of the film industry, including film festival leaders, filmmakers, and a good understanding of the current landscape of documentary film
