Organization Overview

BAWT is a 22 year-old organization dedicated to lowering the barriers that prevent youth from accessing the outdoors. Operating from three locations in the Bay Area—East Bay (Oakland), San Francisco, and South Bay (Milpitas)—each year BAWT’s scalable model trains hundreds of teachers and youth workers who take thousands of youth on transformative trips into the outdoors. BAWT’s Mission is to create equitable access to outdoor experiences for youth of color and low-income youth

In pursuit of our Mission we exist as a vital, comprehensive, and ongoing source of support to community members leading local youth on wilderness trips. We envision a generation of social and environmental leaders, inspired by positive and meaningful experiences in nature, who reflect the diversity of our local community. When barriers to accessing the outdoors are lowered, youth experience social and emotional benefits that support them in multiple aspects of their lives. Despite the impact of the pandemic, our mission, passion, and commitment to our work remain strong. In 2020, our staff and Board of Advisors worked diligently to ensure BAWT resiliency and positioned our organization so that we may resume our important program work as things open back up.

BAWT is not unlike any other organization facing the challenges that come with mending a broken system. Improving race relations and striving for equity are not new topics. The work to change these dynamics has gone on since our country’s inception. And that makes them part of our truth. It’s difficult work, albeit arguably the most important work of our lives. It’s a journey. The growth that happens in the process fuels BAWT’s long-term commitment to improving equity and race relations even beyond our community.

We look forward to finding the ideal Co-Executive Director to join BAWT as the organization transitions back to full-scale program work and deepening our commitment to increasing access to the outdoors for Bay Area youth.

BAWT seeks individuals with diverse skills and experiences to reflect and better serve our community. Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA+ individuals, differently-abled individuals, women, and people from otherwise marginalized communities are highly encouraged to apply.

BAWT is a fiscally sponsored project of Earth Island Institute, a registered 501(c)3 organization. This position would be an employee of Earth Island. Earth Island Institute provides equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin, age, disability, genetic information, marital status, amnesty, or status as a covered veteran in accordance with applicable federal, state and local laws.   You can learn more at www.earthisland.org.
