Founded in 1988, the Lavender Youth Recreation & Information Center (LYRIC) provides supports and services to over 500 lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning (LGBTQQ) and allied youth per year. LYRIC’s mission is to build community and inspire positive social change through education enhancement, career training, health promotion, and leadership development with LGBTQQ youth, their families, and allies of all races, classes, genders, and abilities. The organization has a budget of over $4 million, a staff of 30 (over half of which are newly unionized), and nearly 100 youth in paid internships. The People Operations Director is responsible for leading and implementing LYRIC's human resources, labor relations, general operations, professional development, and organizational diversity, culture, and equity functions. We are looking for a leader who is highly emotionally intelligent, committed to social justice, and finds joy in executing the fine details of administration and compliance. We are also eager for someone who has experience fostering productive relationships with labor partners. Leading a team of two staff – a Talent Development Manager who oversees and supports the employee lifecycle, and an Operations Specialist who oversees facilities, IT, and other operational duties- the People Operations Director will work collectively to manage staff benefits, developing and effectuating human resources and management policies, and envisioning growth for individuals and the organization. This role will support management by providing human resources and labor relations advice, counsel, and decisions; analyzing information and applications. The People Operations Director will g uide management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines; communicating and enforcing organization values; and developing a strong working relationship with LYRIC’s labor partner.

Leadership Development & Organizational Culture
- Participate as a member of the Leadership Team in bringing HR/Operations perspective to strategic initiatives of the organization
- Collaborate with Leadership Team and staff, to lead and develop LYRIC’s internal racial equity work
- Support and contribute to a youth-focused culture rooted in racial equity, social justice, shared responsibility, and fun
- With the Talent Development Manager, develop strategies related to organizational culture, recruitment, and talent development
- Supervise the People Ops team, which consists of a Talent Development Manager and Operations Specialist.
- Oversee and coordinate LYRIC’s labor relations, ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement, and represent LYRIC as an organization with OPEIU Local 29.
Human Resources Management
- Oversee the maintenance of our BambooHR HRIS software.
- With Talent Development Manager, oversee recruitment, interviewing, hiring and onboarding process, ensuring that LYRIC recruits and retains a diverse, culturally competent workforce that represents the community it serves
- Oversee performance evaluation process with Talent Development Manager by ensuring that performance reviews are completed annually and performance issues are addressed
- Serve as a coach for supervisors around team performance
- With supervisors, address employee concerns, complaints and resolve conflicts that arise. Conduct HR investigations when needed, in consultation with legal counsel
- Ensure HR compliance with local, state and federal laws and regulations, including San Francisco public contract requirements, in consultation with legal counsel where needed
- Support employees in the off-boarding process alongside the Talent Development Manager and Operations Specialist
- In partnership with other organizational leaders, develop and administer a compensation plan and conduct an annual equity analysis of key HR metrics including turnover, hiring, compensation and benefits
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date confidential HR files
- Oversee benefit administration including negotiation of annual renewals and open enrollment
- Serve as educator and point of contact for staff questions and concerns about benefits
- Develop LYRIC’s personnel policies with a holistic, staff-focused lens
- Ensure consistent compliance with LYRIC personnel policies and procedures through onboarding, staff training, and annual review and updates to personnel policies and procedures
- Manage staff leaves of absence (CFRA, PDL, etc.)
- Coordinate and provide leadership during union negotiations in consultation with legal counsel, including preparing and seeking feedback on proposals and assessing their financial and operational implications
- Develop and manage a process for reviewing and resolving employee grievances
- Ensure compliance with labor law and the collective bargaining agreement, and oversee implementation of the agreement
- Provide guidance and assistance to supervisors on labor relations matters
- Facilitate LYRIC’s relationship with OPEIU Local 29
- With Operations Specialist, oversee LYRIC facilities, IT, office space, technology, printing, reception and general operations
- Responsible for managing the LYRIC property, which is owned by the organization
- Take a major role in preparing the LYRIC house for LYRIC’s capital renovation project which will involve full demolition and remodel of a large area of the property
- With the Operations Specialist, coordinate emergency preparedness and asset management
- Manage negotiation, renewal, and maintenance of business insurances and maintain a robust risk management practice
- With the Operations Specialist, oversee the management of LYRIC vendors, e.g. IT and telecom support, janitorial, maintenance, etc.
- Develop and maintain written documentation for office and HR procedures
- Five+ years of professional experience, preferably in a non-profit environment
- 3+ years of staff supervision experience
- Experience working with unions and representing an organization in union negotiations
- PHR, SPHR, certification highly desirable
- Creative and innovative approach to people operations rooted in social justice and holistic care for each employee
- Demonstrated high-level administrative analysis, and decision-making skills
- High level of emotional intelligence and cultural humility, along with demonstrated ability to use a variety of conflict resolution techniques
- Outstanding leadership skills; ability to model team-building and consensus-building in the workplace
- Excellent project management and planning skills. Attention to detail and the ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects within deadlines.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; highly organized
- Experience with budgeting and fiscal management
- Passion and commitment to fostering healthy LGBTQQ youth and ability to work in a supportive role within protocols that prioritize youth development principles and organizational capacity
- Knowledge of youth issues, particularly those affecting LGBTQQ youth, and commitment to youth development, social justice, and racial equity principles and practices
- Experience and competencies in working in a multiracial, multicultural environment
