The Director of Local Government Affairs will be responsible for developing and executing a program to engage cities and towns across America in the fight against gun violence. The primary goal of this role is to oversee a team dedicated to cultivating relationships with mayors, city councils, law enforcement officials, and other local leaders, providing them with expertise on strategies to reduce gun violence in their communities, as well as engaging them in Everytown’s work to enact policy change at the state and federal level.

The Director role will leverage Everytown’s networks and expertise to identify strategies for reducing gun violence in cities and other municipalities. Working in close collaboration with Everytown’s State Government Affairs, Policy, Research, Field, and other teams, the Director will help build a robust local government affairs practice that advances city-based gun violence prevention strategies, local legislative efforts, promising violence intervention programs, and smart policing strategies. This includes overseeing the management and growth of Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG), a bi-partisan coalition of over a thousand mayors committed to reducing gun violence.

A successful director will establish Everytown as a go-to resource for local leaders working to enact sensible gun laws and prevent gun violence. Ideal candidates are entrepreneurial and collaborative, with strong management skills and a history of success working in or with state or local governments. The Director will report to the Managing Director of State Policy and Government Affairs and manage the members of the Local Government Affairs team.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Team-Building and Management

  • Manage the Local Government Affairs team, which includes the Managers of MAIG and Law Enforcement Outreach
  • In consultation with the Managing Director of Law and Policy and the Managing Director of State Policy and Government Affairs, help grow this team to provide the full scope of services described above.

Relationship Building

  • Working closely with the State Government Affairs team, MAIG, and the law enforcement manager to build and strengthen relationships with local elected officials, law enforcement, and other stakeholders, providing them with policy analysis, and other guidance.

Expert Knowledge

  • Become steeped in firearm policy in order identify opportunities and provide policy analysis.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the legislative and other policy work happening in each state, in order to effectively coordinate local and state-wide campaigns.

Work Effectively Within A Cross-Departmental Structure

  • Work closely with other teams at Everytown, including State Government Affairs, Policy, Field, and Research, in order to identify policy solutions appropriate for a given jurisdiction and coordinate allocation of resources.

You’ll need to have:

  • 5 or more years experience working in or with state or local government
  • Demonstrated experience managing partnerships and relationships at the state or local level
  • Proven entrepreneurialism and adaptability, this will come in handy whilst growing and overseeing a new program
  • Strong management skills, with a demonstrated ability to coach and mentor individuals and teams to meet ambitious goals
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with demonstrated success communicating complex policy strategies to diverse audiences (both internal and external)
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential situations. Additionally, you’ll need to possess strong conflict resolution skills
