The Washington Monthly is a nationally recognized political magazine in its 51st year of publication, known for its independent progressive voice and its ability to change policy debates in Washington, DC and beyond.  We are seeking a Business Operations Manager, who will have responsibilities for a wide range of publishing-side activities, including: 

  • Managing advertising operations including contracts, invoicing and receivables and assisting with production (pre-flighting) of all ads;
  • Managing account payables and receivables and maintaining financial files; 
  • Basic bookkeeping;
  • Replying to inquiries to “services” in-box, processing credit card payments.
  • Managing author contracts and payments;
  • Managing impact tracking and assisting with foundation grant reporting;
  • Coordinating engagement with donors and outreach to potential donors;
  • Assisting with magazine promotion and publicity;
  • Helping to coordinate and manage events and panel discussions;
  • Processing requests for reprints and back copies; 
  • Assisting with management of circulation and subscriptions;
  • Ordering office supplies and maintaining office equipment (copy machine, postage meter, etc.);
  • Helping to maintain magazine archives; and
  • Providing general support to the Deputy Director as necessary.

Qualifications: 

  • At minimum, a Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of broad experience in at least some of the areas above, preferably in a non-profit environment, with an eagerness to be trained in the other areas;
  • Experience with QuickBooks;
  • Highly developed organizational and multi-tasking skills;
  • Quick-study, self-starter with the ability to work with – and bring order to – a team of obstreperous journalists 

We are looking for someone who meets the above qualifications and has an interest in and commitment to the work of the Washington Monthly.
