The Promise of Justice Initiative (PJI) is a New Orleans based nonprofit that works to create positive change for people in the criminal justice system at the intersection of direct services, impact litigation, and community engagement. We believe in a world where our justice system values each person; a world where the system supports rehabilitation, and a world where we approach justice with a lens of healing and restoration for those who are harmed. This world will be safer and more secure for all people. 


The Acadiana Organizer position will help build a grassroots, community-informed movement to repeal Louisiana’s death penalty through Louisiana’s state legislature. The Acadiana Organizer will be a key player on our policy team for one year, with the possibility of an additional year renewal. A deep commitment to the values of criminal legal reform, racial justice, and the power of community organizing are critical for success in the position. 

**Please note: this is a non-remote position is based in Lafayette, LA. This position is not remote, or based in our New Orleans office.**


The Acadiana Organizer will:

  • Develop relationships with community leaders and work with them on issues of death penalty abolition and other issues of extreme sentencing. 
  • Develop and present materials to constituencies traditionally not associated with death penalty repeal and criminal legal reform movements (e.g. political conservatives, crime survivors, evangelicals, etc.). 
  • Build meaningful relationships with established community groups working in criminal legal reform. 
  • Mobilize volunteers and community activists to plan and participate in actions such as speak outs, press releases, film screenings, and vigils. 
  • As part as PJI’s organizing team, develop and implement campaign and communication plans. 
  • Organize constituent outreach to State legislatures including individual meetings/phone calls/emails as well as mass outreach (sign-ons and petitions).
  • Contribute to communications work like drafting press releases, giving interviews, and updating social media. 
  • Travel to the Louisiana State Capitol to participate in lobby days and legislative hearings.  
  • Plan and implement public education campaigns that explain the connection between Louisiana’s current system of mass incarceration and the death penalty to it legacy of systemic racism. 


Required Qualifications

  • A demonstrated passion for issues of racial equity, justice, and criminal legal reform. Directly impacted individuals are strongly encouraged to apply. 
  • Ability to work around and with people who experienced trauma.
  • Ability to use standard office technology (Microsoft Office, email, social media accounts). 
  • An ability to create campaign plans and develop tactics in support of a larger strategic goal. 
  • The ability to have difficult conversations about sensitive subject matter. 
  • Valid driver's license
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs 
  • Ability to travel to other parts of the state


Preferred Qualifications

  • Community organizing experience 
  • Ability to make and maintain deep connections with diverse communities. 
  • Experience working on campaigns with a legislative focus is a plus. 
  • Comfortable with the self-advocacy and self-care necessary to work on demanding campaigns that can be triggering and require processing traumatic experiences.  

Salary will be commensurate with experience from $40,000-50,000 with generous benefits.
