Mountain Area Residential Facilities (MARF) is seeking our next Executive Director. We are a small, private nonprofit organization providing residential and community inclusion services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Western North Carolina since 1974. We serve thirteen individuals between two group homes. We empower our folks in developing independence and self-determination in order to live full, meaningful lives. Our folks are active, engaged members of their community. MARF’s core values include integrity, social justice, and human dignity. 


The Executive Director works under the Board of Directors and manages a leadership team and two groups of Direct Support Professionals, totalling approximately twenty-five employees, as well as a Human Rights Committee and an Interdisciplinary Team. The Executive Director is responsible for Board recruitment, budget development, writing policies, procedures, and the Strategic Plan, ensuring that the organization maintains compliance with federal, state, and accreditation regulations, and strengthening relationships with community partners and other stakeholders. The Executive Director guides the organization in providing exceptional care to persons served, and functions as the representative of the organization to all managing and licensing bodies. 


Required education, experience, skills, and traits:

  • Master’s Degree in human services, public health, nonprofit management, or related field, OR corresponding Bachelor’s Degree combined with significant experience in human services
  • Strong leadership skills with experience as part of a multi-tiered team
  • Experience with budgeting and financial reporting
  • Emergency or crisis management skills
  • Exceptional problem solving skills
  • Ability to work direct support as necessary
  • Ability to provide back-up support to the on-call administrator 
  • Understanding of strategic planning
  • Compliance with many levels of rules and regulations
  • Relationship building with stakeholders and community partners
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities in a professional or informal capacity
  • Cultural humility and prioritization of equity and inclusion
  • Adaptability and resilience under stress


Preferred education, experience, and skills:

  • Experience in a group home setting
  • Experience with fundraising
  • Knowledge of Medicaid and Medicare systems
  • Knowledge of DHSR licensing process
  • Experience with CARF or other accreditation processes
  • Experience with Managed Care Organizations
  • Participation in financial audits
  • Basic understanding of medical and psychological terminology


Compensation: $47,000-50,000 as well as employer sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance and paid time off.
