For more than 50 years LAF has provided free civil legal aid to people living in poverty, seniors, veterans, and other vulnerable people in Chicago and suburban Cook County. LAF’s attorneys and staff help resolve non-criminal legal problems such as domestic violence, consumer fraud, unfair evictions, and improper denial of benefits. Our work impacts over 30,000 people each year.
Position: LAF is seeking one full-time Intake Specialist in our Client Screening Unit located in downtown Chicago.
Responsibilities: Intake Specialists register all applicants for services in an electronic case management system, and conduct telephone interviews to determine their eligibility for services, identify basic case facts, and identify basic legal problems. Applications for services are accepted by phone, online, in person, and through referrals from one of LAF’s community partners. Intake Specialists apply LAF’s eligibility guidelines and priorities to evaluate what level of assistance can be offered. Intake specialists give limited legal advice under the direction and supervision of attorneys. When more extended service may be warranted, they schedule appointments with one of LAF’s practice groups or community legal clinics.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D., excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills, the ability to work well under pressure, and to learn and retain new information. Fluency in a second language is a plus. Computer proficiency is required, including familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
Salary: Depends on experience. Bilingual Intake Specialists may qualify for an additional stipend by providing interpreting services to other LAF staff. LAF offers generous fringe benefits.
