Job Description

The Director of Student Support Services manages all aspects of the school’s special education and social-emotional program. They are an integral part of the academic leadership team and are responsible for maintaining the school’s mission as it applies to social-emotional learning as well as academic and behavioral support.


Essential Duties

Vision and Program

Lead the school’s approach to special education and academic and behavioral support services using the Response to Intervention framework

Oversee the development and implementation of social-emotional curriculum across the school program, including sexuality education

Collaborate with the Head of School to create and maintain a positive, developmentally-appropriate, and student-centered approach to discipline across the organization

Contract with professional development consultants related to school culture, special education and social-emotional learning

Provide professional development and coaching to faculty regarding social-emotional learning and academic and behavioral supports

Ensure that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices at the school inform all aspects of the student support services program

Create venues for student leadership pertaining to school culture and social-emotional learning


Special Education Compliance

Make certain that High Meadow School follows special education laws and regulations

Maintain strict confidentiality concerning student records, services, and correspondence with families and service providers

Ensure student records, files, and delivery of services are according to federal and state laws and regulations

Coordinate all mandated special education services and accommodations in accordance with student IEPs and/or 504 plans

Verify that all teachers know of, understand, and implement all classroom accommodations and modifications required by IEPs and 504 plans


Student Support Service Coordination


Liaise with local CSE concerning all aspects of the IEP and/or 504 process 

Coordinate all IEP meetings, including informing teachers, providers, and families in a timely manner and compiling all necessary documentation and data

Submit documentation to the CSE in advance of IEP meetings

Meet with classroom teachers to review individual student IEPs and accommodations as needed

Communicate with outside service providers to ensure that strategies are used with consistency across outside and school environments

Coordinate with the High Meadow School health office regarding health accommodations outlined in student IEPS and 504 plans

Maintain an up to date catalog of local outside service providers to recommend for students who are deemed at-risk or who need services that the school cannot provide onsite

Assess psycho-educational testing with current knowledge base regarding learning differences/disabilities and educational trends

Serve as a point person and guide for families negotiating the IEP/504 process

Provide families with information and guidance regarding evaluation procedures, timeline, and due process rights

Gather related service progress reports and summarize progress with families when providers are unable to attend IEP meetings

Collaborate with Assessment Coordinator to ensure students with IEPs receive appropriate testing accommodations

Coordinate with the admissions department to evaluate the needs of prospective and incoming students and provide guidance for accommodations

Coordinate with Upper School Division Head surrounding high school placement for students with IEP and/or 504 plans 

Create and maintain up-to-date classroom service schedules


Response to Intervention

Facilitate Child Study Team(CST) meetings to discuss student needs and plan next steps to support their learning 

Conduct classroom observations for students referred to Child Study Team

Ensure consistent data collection and progress monitoring within each tiered level of intervention support

Support the FBA & BIP creation process by conducting student observations and participating in the data collection process

Provide academic and behavior support as needed in the school community

Other duties as assigned by supervisor


Supervisory Responsibility

Supervises members of the student support services team, including an academic and behavioral support specialist and contracted service providers.


Work Details

This is a full-time, 12-month position

This position functions onsite 5 days a week

The physical demands of this job include some lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, crouching, reaching overhead and/or climbing ramps or stairs

The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment

Bachelor’s degree in special education, school administration, school counseling, or another related field required; master’s degree preferred

Must align and show commitment towards High Meadow School’s mission, core values, and goals

Must have a minimum of 5 years of successful employment experience in a school environment

Must have a track record of commitment to work regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion in school environments

Demonstrates an ability to look at students from a strengths-based perspective

Must have a strong grasp of educational law as pertains to special education

Strong understanding of learning and behavioral differences

Understanding of the Response to Intervention program preferred

Experience liaising with Committees on Special Education preferred

Experience overseeing and developing social-emotional learning programs preferred

Must be able to maintain a calm and supportive demeanor when working with children, colleagues, families, and supervisors

Strong organizational skills required
